Ban on open fires

July 9, a ban on open fires in all areas of Nova Scotia went into effect.

Rob Uttaro, Department of Natural Resources fire management supervisor, says warm and dry weather has driven the fire weather index to high or extreme.

There are to be no open fires for any purpose in woods, or within 305 metres of the woods, in any part of the province.

Unless the province receives significant rain, the ban could stay in effect until mid-September.



Canning firefighters had a couple of boat-related emergencies last week, but only one was in the water at the time.

The department responded to a call about a boat on fire sitting on a trailer on the Stair’s Branch Road July 5. The boat was completely destroyed.

Canning firefighters responded to a call about a sailboat in distress off Kingsport July 7. The boat apparently lost its rudder and was adrift in the water. The boat had to be pulled in. Hantsport and New Minas departments responded in mutual aid with their rescue crafts. There were no injuries.

Canning responded to a fire alarm sounding on the Gospel Road in Arlington July 7.

Canning firefighters responded to a call for medical assistance in Baxter’s Harbour July 8.

Wolfville firefighters were called to assist the RCMP on Highway 101 in Avonport at 12:20 a.m. July 5 to help clean up following a collision involving a deer and a tractor trailer, and then the deer and a motorcycle. No one was injured in the collisions.

Wolfville responded to a grass and brush fire on Oak Island Road in Avonport July 6 at 1:35 p.m. Greenwich responded in mutual aid, providing stand-in assistance.

Kentville responded to a total of 10 calls last week, including four fire alarms, two calls for medical assistance and one call involving a carbon monoxide detector sounding.

Kentville was called to a Coldbrook business to help deal with a broken water pipe and responded to two calls involving power poles on fire, one on Steadman Road in Billtown July 9 and one in Blue Mountain struck by lightning July 10.

New Minas firefighters responded to an alarm sounding at the United Baptist Church July 8.

Waterville and District Fire Department responded June 19 to a single vehicle roll over on Highway 1 in Cambridge. The call was received at 23:31 after a vehicle left the road and overturned on a lawn, plowing through two property fences. Firefighters assisted police with traffic and scene lighting until 1:11.

June 29 at 8:04, crews were dispatached to an alarm at the Plantation Campground in Grafton. It turned out to be a faulty detector. Crews were returned at 8:34.

June 30 at 13:41, firefighters received a call for a possible fuel leak at a residence on Black Rock Road. Crews and equipment were back at 14:32. Later, at 16:16, crews responded to an alarm at the Kings Regional Rehabiliation Centre. A faulty detector was responsible. Firefighters returned at 16:31.

July 8 at 21:04, the department answered a call to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 1 and Cambridge Mountain Road. Crews assisted police and paramedics until 22:26.

At 11:20 a.m., Waterville received a mutual aid call from Kentville for the aerial ladder.
