Summer stuff at CentreStage

CentreStage Theatre has hired an artistic director for its children’s theatre camps this summer.

Cynthia Myers of Chester has many years of experience running children’s theatre programs in Nova Scotia and the U.S.

There is still time to sign up for the two camps: one for those ages 8-11; and one for those 12-16. Campers will learn stage skills, have a part in the theatre camp play to be performed on the Saturday and Sunday afternoons following the camp.

Camp dates are Aug. 11-15 (with performances Aug. 16 and17) – ages 8-11; Aug. 18-22 (with performances Aug. 23 to 24) – ages 12-16.

Cost is $100 and the application deadline is July 15.

Snow White in the summer

What do you get when you cross a magic mirror, a dorf and Snow White? A rollicking good time!

Starting July 17, CentreStage Theatre in Kentville will present Snow White by Lani Brockman and Susan Bardsley. “The show is the classic story of Snow White... uh ...well ... it's a classic telling of a version of Snow White!” says the show’s director, Donna-Lynne Holmes.

In this 45-minute musical version, not only are there references to 1,065 ways to prepare Spam luncheon meat, there are also tons of knock-knock jokes, sarcastic humour and silly puns. You even get a chance to help Snow White think of different ways to prepare Spam, or decide whether to take the apple from the hag or not.

According to Ethan and Emelina Van Meekeren, two of the younger cast members, the best part of the show is the chase scene. Phoebe Thibault-Sherrard makes her acting debut as Squat Dorf.

The show also stars Britney Hope, Mary Walker Hope, Bob Cook, Steven Hope, Zach Rigby, Logan Levesque and Jessica D'Entremont.

Snow White plays Thursdays and Fridays at 7 p.m., July 17 to July 25. Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. will be July 19 and 26. All seats are $5. Call 678-8040 to reserve a seat. CentreStage Theatre is located at 61 River Street, Kentville.

Choir in concert

The Maryland State Boychoir, under the direction of Frank Cimino and Stephen Holmes, will present a concert July 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Kings Presbyterian Church, Prospect Road, New Minas.

This performance will showcase their Tour Choir (37 voices) and will take place as part of their two-week summer tour through the New England area and Nova Scotia. The concert program will include classical and contemporary choral works, both sacred and secular. Additionally, spirituals, hymns, gospel and popular music will be sung.

This concert is free and open to the public.

Stone Angel on screen

Fundy Summer Films screens The Stone Angel July 20, based on Margaret Laurence’s beloved Canadian classic.

This is feisty Hagar Shipley’s (Ellen Burstyn) story. Her heart always ruled her head, putting her at odds with family and friends. In old age, she sets out to reconcile her turbulent past.

The film screens at the Al Whittle Theatre, Wolfville, at 8 p.m. Tickets ($8) are available 30 minutes before screening.

Visit www.fundyfilm.ca or call (902) 542-5157.

New at Harvest

Some 15 new works by artist Marcelle Belliveau are featured in an exhibition at Harvest Gallery in Wolfville.

Belliveau is president of the Conseil des Arts de la Baie, a founding member of la Manivelle printshop and a partner in Galerie Saule.

“Much of my work reflects the difficulties I have faced in trying to live within and without the Acadian culture,” she says. “Language plays a key role, not only in my continuing struggles with personal identity, but also as an evolving reminder of broader cultural loss.”

An afternoon with Glen Ells

Author, historian and local farmer Glen Ells will spend the afternoon July 26 at Noggin’s Corner Farm in Greenwich to sign books, meet, greet and talk about his book, Starting Over: Acadian and New England Planters in Nova Scotia in the 1760s.

Centering on stage

CentreStage Theatre presents an adult acting workshop Wednesday, Aug. 13 and 20 for the adult actor (or actor curious) who want to dust off their acting skills, brush up their improv and play. These two evenings will focus on connecting thought to body and remembering how to communicate with honesty. The sessions will be led by Cynthia Myers.

Cost: $15 for one night/ $25 for both (members’ discounts available), 7-9 p.m.
