UNESCO designates second World Heritage Site in Nova Scotia

On Monday, July 7, 2008, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee designated the Joggins Fossil Cliffs as a World Heritage Site, a second such site in Nova Scotia, bringing attention to the province’s unique heritage.

“Congratulations to Joggins for this very prestigious honour. The world recognized a unique heritage, a heritage that Nova Scotians are proud of,” says Erin Beaudin, co-chair of the Grand-Pré World Heritage nomination proposal Advisory Board. “This is an extraordinary privilege for Nova Scotia to be home to two World Heritage Sites and we’re actively working on adding a third one to the list,” adds Beaudin.

Grand-Pré is one of the original 11 sites that Canada had included on its list of sites it intends to propose for World Heritage designation in the next few years. Work is actively underway to prepare a nomination for the cultural landscape of Grand-Pré, a proposal that will consider the dykelands and their surroundings.

The World Heritage List is an instrument of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention and contains natural and cultural properties that were found to have outstanding universal value and whose protection is of interest to humanity as a whole. Canada currently has 15 sites on the World Heritage List, including Old Town Lunenburg and The Joggins Fossil Cliffs here in Nova Scotia.

The Grand-Pré World Heritage nomination proposal Advisory Board is aiming to complete the nomination proposal for submission to UNESCO in February 2010. Regular updates on the nomination proposal can be accessed online at www.nominationgrandpre.ca.
