Canada Day in Weymouth—a dual celebration
By Karla Kelly
Weymouth celebrated July 1 with a dual purpose as it was not only Canada’s 141st birthday, but marks the 225th anniversary of the Loyalist landing in 1783 so there were people dressed in period costume, parade floats with a vintage theme and the Union Flag on display.
The day began with flag raising and cake cutting ceremonies, followed by the grand street parade and duck race.
Miss Weymouth Sara LeBlanc, princesses Chelsea Thibault and Kaitlin Saulnier and Queen Annapolisa Amanda Walker and Princess Coldbrook added royalty to the festivities.
A duck race sponsored by the Weymouth Kiwanis Club was a sell-out, said club member Judy Cromwell. All 500 ducks were dropped in the Sissiboo for the race, which was won by Connor Mullen of Weaver Settlement.
A Legion breakfast and WOW-TV bingo were well attended said organizing committee member Jeanne Nesbitt.
"We had the biggest turn out ever for the WOW TV bingo," said Nesbitt. "The attendance for the Legion breakfast was excellent and we felt that the parade was one of the best in recent years.
"The community support for all the July 1 events was amazing. The fair kept children and adults alike entertained in between events and all of Main Street was packed for the parade."
The band ‘Whiskey River’ provided musical entertainment from early evening until dusk when the day’s events were highlighted by the Weymouth Fire Department fireworks display. Crowds of spectators lined the south side of the Sissiboo and all along the bridge in anticipation of the spectacular light show.
Deputy fire chief Lester Moulton said that the department spent extra money this year to extend the length of the show.
"From the applause of the crowd and the positive comments we received, we knew it was a successful fireworks display and worth the extra money," Moulton said.
A dance at the Legion with the band ‘Doin’ Country’ ended Canada Day celebrations.
