Former North Queens Rural High School student Jenna Martin had some inspirational words for students just before summer vacation started on June 27.
“I came from a small town, and people think you can’t achieve anything if you do,” said Martin. “I want (the students) to know that anything is possible and the sky is the limit.”
Although she did not graduate from North Queens High School, Martin said she still feels a connection to the school.
Back in June of 2001, when Martin attended NQRHS, the Advance did a story on Martin, then 13, and how she was already breaking records at Track and Field meets.
She went on to Bridgewater, and then to Birchtown Nova Scotia to train under Coach Charles Scarrow.
Now 20, she has won numerous awards and holds an impressive 53 records in Nova Scotia Track and Field 100, 200, 400 and 800 meter events. Martin was also the top-ranked Canadian in the 400-meter as a senior high student.
Now in university, Martin continues to break records, and is setting her aim to Olympic levels
This past weekend she competed in Windsor Ontario for a spot in the 400m events at this year’s Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Currently, Martin is studying Kinesiology at the University of Kentucky, with a minor in business.
Afterwards, she hopes to continue as a professional track and field athlete, and someday hopes to run her own personal training business.
