Lorraine Geraldine Rand – With deep appreciation for her long and full life, the family of Lorraine Geraldine (Hiltz) Rand announces her death, at home on Friday, June 27, 2008. Born in Yarmouth on December 15, 1917 to Edgar and Grace (Roy) Hiltz, she grew up in Kentville with brothers, Clifton, Donald and Kenneth(d), and sisters, Dorothy(d) and Evelyn. Lorraine met her husband, Eustace (d 1988), while working in Port Williams. They married in 1944, launching an active family and community life. She was Mom to Catherine (Allen Tough) Rand, Toronto; Margaret(d) (John) Russell, Port Williams; Ainsley (Lloyd) Robinson, Round Hill; Rebecca (Michael) Young, Dartmouth and Roger (Donna), Kugluktuk, Nunavut. She was Nanny to grandchildren, Kimberely and Paul Russell, Nicholas and Megan Young and Nathan, Jenny and Mitchell Rand, and GG to great granddaughter, Logan Russell. To the community she was the general merchant's wife, often actively involved with Eustace at E.L. Rand's General Store in Port Williams until they retired from business in 1976. To Girl Guides in the 1960's, she was known as Echo. She was Guider in the 1st Port Williams Guide Company and took hundreds of Guides under her leadership to Hardwood Lake Camp. Later she became Area Camp Advisor responsible for monitoring all that went on at Hardwood Lake Camps each summer. And she loved singing. Lorraine took some voice training at Acadia University in her early adult years and her love of singing was expressed in solo work, and as a member of the Port Williams Baptist Church choir for twenty-five years. And there was much impromptu singing in the Rand family home. Still others knew Lorraine as a craftsperson and seamstress. She made clothes for four growing daughters. As family demands waned, she became involved in quilting, often creating her own designs. She produced handcrafts for the St. Thomas Anglican Church Christmas sale in Kingsport for many years. But it was rug hooking that captivated Lorraine in 1977 and did so for the rest of her life. It provided an outlet for her creativity and delight in beautiful things, be they mats, wall hangings, chair seat covers, screens, and whether from traditional patterns or from her own designs. The hooking community benefited from her organizational skills when in 1980 she was heavily involved in creating the first rug hooking school in Nova Scotia at Church Point. This began an annual tradition, for which she received a Lifetime Award in 2005. Lorraine's life was marked by boundless energy, creativity, ready laughter, great story-telling, and enthusiasm for all that she undertook. She lived independently, driving her own car, attending weekly rug hooking sessions, until after her 90th birthday celebration in December, 2007. A month later she was diagnosed with lung cancer and with tenderness was cared for by family, friends and health care professionals during its challenges. There was no visitation at the family's request. A funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2008 at St. John's Anglican Church in Church Street, officiated by Reverend David Garrett, interment followed in the church cemetery. Following, the family was happy to receive family and friends at a reception at Lockwood Hall, Port Williams United Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation - Carey Me, P.O. Box 911, Kentville, Nova Scotia, B4N 4H8 (a local fund that allows those in need to spend their last days at home), or a charity of choice. On-line inquiries may be directed to www.whitefamilyfuneralhome .com. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville.
