Garrett Ramey saved the best for last in wrapping up the overall Field of Dreams series title Tuesday, June 17 at the Launch Pad in Port Williams.

Ramey, a student at Saint Mary’s University, threw a personal best 15.10 metres in the men’s shot put to finish the series with 3,447 points based on the results of his best four series meets.

Other men’s shot put results included Andrew MacDonald with a best throw of 13.08 metres (also a personal best) and eight-year-old Edmund Wohlmuth of Port Williams with a best throw of 4.0 metres.

In the women’s shot put, Nicole Larade had a best throw of 12.23 metres, Chelsea Whalen threw 11.96 metres and Taya McGillivary 10.03 metres.

In women’s discus, Larade had a best throw of 38.07 metres and Whalen’s best was a 33.03-metre toss. MacDonald had a best throw of 31.48 metres in men’s discus.

Whalen won the women’s javelin with a 37.30-metre throw. Larade also competed in the javelin, and managed a best throw of 23.39 metres in an ‘off’ event.

MacDonald ended up second in the overall series standings with 3,026 points. Larade was third with 2,640 points, Whalen fourth with 2,303 and McGillivary rounded out the top five with 2,217 points.

The 2008 throwing season for the Launchers Athletics throwing club will wrap up with the annual Corn Boil Open Saturday, Aug. 30 at the Launch Pad. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. with the competition itself set to get underway at 11.

This fun competition is open to all ages (last year, the registration ranged from age six to 49, with many youngsters competing with, and against, their parents).
