June 15 to June 21, 2008 LAKE, Douglas Ivan - 76, Falmouth, Hants Co., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family Sunday, June 15, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Summerville, he was the son of the late Embert Sr. and Martha (Mosher) Lake. Doug loved music, especially country and bluegrass. He enjoyed attending bluegrass festivals. He also loved to play guitar. He worked for Fundy Gypsum Co., then Avon Valley Greenhouses and as a capenter until retiring. Doug enjoyed fishing, family and friends, as well as a good cup of tea. Doug was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, the former Mary Shaw; sons, Paul (Roxann), Falmouth; Terry (Tanya), Martock; Jimmy (Heather), Falmouth; Kevin (Barbie), Falmouth; and Bobby (Tracy), Falmouth; grandchildren, Kelly (Richard), Sherry, Courtney, Chris, Kristie, Matthew, Meghan, Katie, Lauren, Andrew, Emilee and Hailey; great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Kaden; sister, Lorna Spencer, Summerville; brother, Prescott Lake, Falmouth; several nieces and nephews. Doug was predeceased by sisters, Geraldine Ross and Mary Smith; brothers, Coleman, Embert Jr. “Bud”, George, Stanley Lake and Chessley Card. Arrangements for cremation have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 18. June 15 to June 21, 2008 VAN DER WOERD, Frances Marie - December 3, 1930 – June 17, 2008. Frances (Fran) Marie van der Woerd (nee Vacon), beloved wife of Hans of Calgary, AB passed away on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at the age of 77 years. Fran’s greatest joy was spending time with her family, singing and listening to music. She always lived her life to the fullest, spreading great joy with her terrific sense of humour and love of life. Besides her loving husband Hans, Fran will be remembered by her daughters and son-in-law, Darlene, Cathy and Liesbeth and Phil Craig; her son and daughter-in-law Paul and Lynda; seven grandchildren, Robert, Alicia, Steven, Jonn (Michelle), Liesbeth, Mitchell and Colin; two great-grandchildren, Cole and Logan; as well as her brother Clarence Vacon; sisters and brother-in-law, Theresa and Eric Landry, Pauline Vacon and Estelle Foster. June 15 to June 21, 2008 ARMSTRONG, Ella Anna -100, of Kingston, passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2008 in the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home. Born in Falkland Ridge, she was a daughter of the late Milford and Alice (Randall) Stoddart. Ella was a graduate of Normal College in 1932 and taught in many one room schools. Later years she worked towards the integration of Special Needs children into regular school. She will be remembered for her love of church, history, antiques, children and pets. Ella is survived by daughters, Ruth Schofield; Marion (Peter) Floris; son, Marven (Carole) Armstrong; brother, Glen Stoddart; grandchildren, Peter and Andrea Floris and Nicholas Armstrong. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph; son-in-law, Gerald Schofield; sisters, Leila Taylor; Pauline Ward; brothers, Harold Stoddart and Maurice Stoddart. June 15 to June 21, 2008 Norman Whalen “Norm” Dimock – 83, of Pereaux, Kings County, passed away, with his family by his side, Thursday, June 19, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Pereaux, he was the youngest son of the late Horace and Dora (Jones) Dimock. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family and was the oldest living resident in Pereaux. He was employed with Avon Foods and in 1988 retired from Canard Poultry. He loved his flower and vegetable gardens, walking in his woods, reading his morning newspaper and trips to Tim Horton’s and his favorite store, Canadian Tire. Norm enjoyed his trip to England in 2000 with his nephew, Tom, friend, Charlie Bramble and daughter, Cathy. He was a longtime member of the Pereaux Baptist Church. Norm was a devoted husband, father and uncle. He is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Doris (Cogswell); daughter, Cathy, Waverley; nephews, Ron Jr. (Phyllis), Pereaux; Tim (Pam), Glenmont; Tom (Win), Fredericton; sisters-in-law, Betty Dimock, Pereaux; Jean (Howard) McCormick, Canning; a large circle of family and friends. He will especially be missed by his faithful canine companion, Ben. Norm was predeceased by brothers, Ron Sr. and George; a nephew, Danny. June 15 to June 21, 2008 Mary “Ferne” Cook (Dystant) - 93, Waterville, Kings County, passed away peacefully in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, on March 25, 2008. She was born March 5, 1915, in Ellerslie, P.E.I. Ferne had worked at R.T. Holman, Summerside, prior to her marriage in 1943. Ferne was a life-long and devoted member of the United Church of Canada. For many years she was on the session and sang in the choir of St Andrew’s United Church, Waterville (later becoming Trinity United). Ferne was a life member of the United Church Women and was an active in the Catherine Phinney Unit, Waterville. She was active in the work of Valley Presbytery & Valley Presbyterial. Her passion was music and although she played the piano from an early age, a church organ would always be a source of inspiration for her. She was an active and committed volunteer in her community and was president of the Home and School Association when Waterville still had its school. In more recent years she sat on the board of the Valley Regional Hospital in Kentville, She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her husband and life-long companion, Claude M. Cook, Waterville; daughter, Connie Wright and spouse, James Wright, Toronto, Ont.; son, Charles Cook and spouse, Marilyn Mullett, Stillwater Lake; granddaughter, Erin Wright and spouse, Tim Ross, great granddaughter, Isabella Ross and great grandson, Leo Ross, Dubai, United Arab Emirates; grandson, Tim Wright and spouse, Tiffany Ring and great grandson, Aidyn Wright, London, UK. Also surviving are sister, Edith Caseley (Dystant) and niece, Janice Bannister (Caseley), Moncton NB; sister-in-law, Margaret Brydon (Cook), niece, Sheila Stewart Blair, Victoria B.C.; and nephew, Darrel Brydon Vancouver B.C. June 15 to June 21, 2008 E. Carolyn Brown died in Foothills Medical Centre, Calgary, Alta., on May 6, 2008. Carolyn was born March 16, 1928, in Holbrook, Mass., to the late Albert and Florence (Potter) Morton. Due to her father's untimely death, she went to reside with her maternal cousins, the late Eva and Alice Clark in Jamaica Plain, Mass., and Bear River, Nova Scotia. She was active throughout her youth as a violinist in various orchestras and as a member of various choirs, including the Handel and Haydn Society of Boston. She graduated from Bridgewater Teachers School (now Bridgewater State College) in 1949. Being one of the first normal schools in the U.S., its mission was to train schoolteachers and Carolyn found her life's calling as a teacher. She taught in Brockton area schools until she immigrated to Canada in 1952. In that year, she married the love of her life, Donald F. Brown of Bear River, and commenced her more than 30 year teaching career within the school systems of Annapolis County and the town of Digby. Her career included a one-room schoolhouse, to modern high school complexes, to many years at the Clark Rutherford Memorial School at CFB Cornwallis. After her retirement, she continued to teach as a literacy volunteer, helping foreign students learn the complexities of the English language. She was an innovative, dedicated and compassionate educator. Carolyn was a great believer in the gift of reading and an avid collector of books. She was a founding member of the Admiral Digby Library and Historical Society, and was active as a volunteer, as its president and as a board member until she left Digby in 1990 to take up residence with her family. Her work was recognized by the society with the Volunteer Honour Roll Award in 2005. She was a life long gardener, a member of the Digby Baptist Church and its choir, a gifted vocal soloist, a proud Canadian citizen (granted in 1962), grandmother and lover of animals. Her great delight in her senior years was introducing the joy of reading to her great-grandson, Elias, and enjoying both his company and that of her many four-footed companions. She was predeceased by her husband Donald in 1987; sisters, Anna G. Morton, Carol Louise Brochu, Nellie A. Lyons and Sylvia K. Barrett; and her brother, Stanley C. Morton. She is survived by her daughters, C. Rebecca Brown (Mark Conway-Brown) of Calgary; Rachel C. Brown, Keswick, Ont.; granddaughters, D. Morgan MacKinnon (Dale) and Ngaio E. Brown, and great-grandson, Elias Donald MacKinnon, all of Calgary; brother Philip T. Morton (Dorothea), Richmond, Texas; sister, Esther P. Costano of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; several cousins, nieces and nephews in the U.S., Italy and Sweden; close friends Gail Hersey of Digby; and Regina Tate of Heatherton, N.S.; and her dear cat, Felix. A memorial service will be held in Digby Baptist Church on Sunday, June 29, at 3 p.m., with Rev. Dr. George Allen officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. A private family burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bear River. June 15 to June 21, 2008 Kathleen Elizabeth Nickerson, 84, concluded her long and full life on Sunday, June 15, 2008 in Roseway Hospital, Shelburne. She was a daughter of Osborne and Annie (Ferguson) Goodwin of Lower Woods Harbour, N.S. Kaye was predeceased by her daughter, Pamela Ruth in infancy; brother, Milledge Goodwin; and her husband, Charles Howard Nickerson. Kaye is survived by her five children, Richard (Patricia), Janet (George) Doleman, Rev. Robert (Betheny), Julie (Daniel) DeMings, Reid (Cyndi); 13 grandchildren, Jeffery (Leah) Nickerson, Leanne (Billy) Hannah, Kate and Michael Doleman, Tara, Benjamin (Sara) and Joy Nickerson, Alexis, Amy and Kasey DeMings, Heidi (Chris) Ross, Caris and Phoebe Nickerson; and four great grandchildren, Chelsea Pardy, Hannah Nickerson, Ethan Hannah and Jonah DeMings; sisters, Genesta (LeRoy) Puittinen (Picton, ON), Audrey Casolo (Ocala, FL), and several nieces and nephews. Kaye served overseas with Canadian Woman’s Army Corp in 1945 and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 148 in Clark’s Harbour, N.S. She and Charles were married October 10, 1949 in Woods Harbour and lived in Chester briefly before moving to Barrington Passage, where they lived for over 50 years. Kaye will be remembered by her generous hospitality and her passion to keep in touch with numerous friends and family with cards and letters. Funeral service was held in Temple United Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, Rev. Edwin Allen officiated. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery. Born in Upper Wood’s Harbour, she was a daughter of the late Crowell and Alice (Jeffrey) Malone. She was a member of the Wood’s Harbour Wesleyan Church. She retired from the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass., and she enjoyed nature. She is survived by son, Austin (Claire), Wood’s Harbour; daughter, Annis (Wendell) MacNeill, Mass., U.S.A.; 8 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren.
