June 8 to June 14, 2008 continued WITHERS(nee Traynor), Eileen Anne. It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Eileen Withers, after a short and courageous battle with lung cancer. She died peacefully with her husband and two children by her side in the Palliative Care Unit at the VG Site QEII in Halifax, at the age of 61. A woman whose journey through life blended several families in many locations, including homes in Scotland, England, Gatineau in Quebec, Ottawa, Halifax, Toronto and finally retirement in Windsor, Nova Scotia. Daughter of proud parents Harry Traynor and Katherine (nee Gill) of Halifax. Beloved wife and best friend of Thomas (Ted) Withers. Cherished mother of Sarah (Keith Bennett, Toronto) and Adam Mahoney (Kendra Hurshman, Windsor). Dear step-mother of Rob Mahoney (Tracey Sliter, Ottawa), Paul Withers (Judy Myrden, Halifax) and Carolyn (Andy Heard, Salt Spring Island, BC). Precious sister of Ian (Ottawa) and Gordon (Halifax), she was predeceased by her sister Christine (Bryan Unsworth, York). Eileen will be sadly missed by her extended family and friends in the UK, the US and throughout Canada. Born in Greenock, Scotland, her family moved to England before she started school. An avid sportswoman and student, tennis and grass-hockey were balanced by studying mathematics and chemistry, eventually completing an honours degree in Economics at the University of London. In 1968, shortly after arriving in Canada, she realized that her French skills, learned in England, were not sufficient so she enrolled in a French ski school. That way, she could learn to ski and speak French at the same time. Her strong work ethic and commitment to efficiency helped propel her into senior policy roles in several federal government departments, and trade negotiator for ITC. Eileen was truly a remarkable and multifaceted woman whose interests included her pets, wine making and antiques. Always fond of puzzles and games, the complexity of duplicate bridge enchanted her and she was a Life Master, and certified as both a director and teacher. She also judged and coached competitive debating teams. A collector by nature she attended estate auctions most weekends. Travel often centred around a theme, first bridge tournaments, then ‘collecting’ state capital domes in the US, and finally, viewing paintings by Vermeer in museums around the world. Her love of art was shared with Ted and they took art history classes together at NSCAD. In recent years, her generosity led her to volunteer with seniors at the Windsor Elms, especially in the Palliative Care Unit. An active member of her church, she was a Eucharistic Minister. Arrangements for cremation were entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317). There was no visitation by request. A funeral mass was held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 339 King St., Windsor, with Rev. Father J.J. MacDonald officiating. A reception was held in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre from 2-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 5826 South St., Halifax, NS B3H 1S6, or your local SPCA Animal Shelter. Private messages of condolence may be made in the “Guest Book” at: www.familycare.ca. She met each challenge in her path with grace and wisdom and it was the gift of herself that she gave to others.
June 8 to June 14, 2008 continued MacLEOD, Daniel "Danny - Bubby" Arthur, age 88, of Windsor. It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Daniel Arthur MacLeod, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Dan passed away peacefully Saturday, June 14, 2008, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, in the arms of his daughter, Nancy, with son-in-law, Eric, granddaughter, Stacy, and grandson-in-law, Bradley, by his side. Born in Three Mile Plains, Hants County, Nova Scotia, January 1, 1920, Dan was the son of the late William and Sophie (Dykens) MacLeod. Dan was known for his friendliness, kindness, dedication and hard work, always making the best home for his family. He began work at a very young age, first at the Fundy Gypsum Company, then the Colonial Fertilizer Company for over 30 years, and in 1972 he joined the Public Works Department, Town of Windsor, retiring in 1984. Dan was an active firefighter with the Windsor Fire Department for 16 years, after which he became a Veteran Fire Fighter. He and his wife Mary, were great supporters for the Windsor Maple Leafs Hockey Team, where he served as goal judge for many years. They also found great joy in camping, spending every weekend with friends and family at Smiley's Park. Dan and his wife were inseparable and rarely could find one without the other. Dan loved watching hockey and baseball on TV, but his greatest passion was watching wrestling. Dan was best known as a family man and always put his family first. His greatest pride was his granddaughters and what they had become. He was a man who "gave so much and asked for so little", always there to lend a helping hand to a friend. His famous words to anyone who visited, were "when you leave, walk down the steps sideways, so you won't fall!", and to his daughter Nancy, "see you tomorrow sweetheart, if nothing happens and God spares us". He leaves behind to mourn his daughter, Nancy Lee (Eric Currie), Windsor; his thought of as a daughter, Leanne (Fred) Mason, Athabasca, Alberta; granddaughters, Audra (Dan) McNeil, Gutersloh, Germany; Stacy (Bradley) Burgess, Mount Uniacke; great-grandchildren, Jordan and Conor McNeil; Hayden and Camdyn Burgess; sister, Ethel Spence, Dykeland Lodge, Windsor; Shirley Shanks, Three Mile Plains; also several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by the love of his life and best friend, his wife of 59 years, the former Mary Audrey Clark (February 23, 2002); brothers, Silas Caldwell; William, Harry, Ronald, Sydney, Walter, Gordon and Roy MacLeod. Visitation was 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2008, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. E. E. Hill officiated. Interment was at the Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor, followed by a reception in the Lindsay Family Reception Centre. Donations in memory of Danny, were requested to be made to the Windsor Fire Department Veteran's Fund or to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation.
