This year marked the second year students from Digby Regional High School participated in the Special Athlete portion of the province’s track and field events.
With the success of last year’s participants fresh in students’ minds, more students were eager to participate and 12 students came out to practices two days per week under the guidance of staff members Reg Melanson, Christine Kelly, Angela Hockley, Chris McCaig, Jason Francis and Kathleen Harris.

The group took part in the district championships in Bridgetown on May 15 where they showed great enthusiasm cheering each other on.

Nine team members qualified return a week later to Bridgetown for the regional championship, and the whole team went to show its support and the great display of team spirit energized and motivated competitors.

Regional results saw seven members of the Digby team qualify for the provincial championships in Lower Sackville:

Junior girls - Michelle Francis, 4th in long jump, 3rd in shot put.

Junior boys - Morgan Graham, 3rd in long jump, 5th in shot put; James Amero, 1st in shot put.

Senior girls - Shannon Amero, 2nd in long jump, 2nd in 100m; Charmaine Amero, 1st in shot put; Joanna Pineau, 5th in 100m

Senior boys - Nikki Speichts, 5th in shot put, 1st in 100 m

The seven provincial qualifiers and teachers Angela Hockley and Anna-Marie MacKenzie Kelly arrived in time to participate in the opening ceremonies June 6 in Lower Sackville and held their banner high.

Digby’s special athletes had made banners with each student’s name to cheer them on and what a great job they did with Digby athletes bringing home seven medals:

Junior girls - Michelle Francis, 3rd in shot put and 6th in long jump.

Junior boys - James Amero, 1st in shot put; Morgan Graham, 7th in long jump.

Senior girls - Shannon Amero, 3rd in 100m, 3rd in long jump; Joanna Pineau, 6th in 100m; Charmaine Amero, 2nd in shot put.

Senior boys - Nikki Speichts, 1st in 100 m, 2nd in shot put.
