Clamming again prohibited in part of Basin
Part of the Annapolis Basin has again been closed to clam harvesting.
Zone 2 between is closed due to an increase in levels of bacteriological contamination that has an adverse effect on shellfish. Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public that the harvesting closure for recreational or commercial purposes was extended again Tuesday, June 17.

A portion of the Annapolis Basin, which includes Thornes Cove, Karlsdale and Twin Cove harvesting areas and defined as east of a line drawn Moose River to a point near Port Wade, remains open for harvesting.

A spill from the town of Digby’s sewage was blamed for the initial closure May 17, when heavy rains overwhelmed the facility. The area has had heavy rain in recent days but town mayor Frank Mackintosh said today he was unaware of any further spill from the treatment facility.

DFO listed no cause for the increase in contamination.

Zone 1, the area nearest Digby, has been closed continuously since May 17.
