The community of students and staff at West Kings came together June 6 in a show of support for one of their own, hosting the first “Logan’s Legacy” fundraiser.

The event commemorated the life of former student Logan Leonard, killed May 18 in a motor vehicle accident in Windermere. He is survived by his wife, Erika Branning, also a West Kings grad; and two young sons, Dylan and Desmond.

When teacher Donna Griffin approached students about doing something to help Leonard’s family, she was met with “instant approval, enthusiasm and support” - what she says is typical of the school community.

Students and teachers made freewill donations June 6 to buy a sticker bearing the Superman logo and, in the process, raised $1,500 for the boys’ trust fund. At lunch, students gathered with Leonard’s family to unveil a banner encouraging other individuals and organizations to donate to the fund.

Griffin addressed students at the lunch-time rally.

“Logan was a hero to his kids and, today, you are heroes to his two little boys. You have created a ripple in the pond and demonstrated what the kindness and friendship of perfect strangers can really do.”

She pledged West Kings “would always be there” for Leonard’s family, many of whom - including his sons - attended the event.

“We hope you can feel that our hearts and thoughts are with you,” added Griffin, on behalf of students and staff.

Donations to the Dylan and Desmond Leonard Trust Fund can be made at the Scotia Bank in Greenwood.
