June 1 to June 7, 2008 continued LeMarchant DeMond Whalen – 94, of Canaan, Kings County, passed away Friday, June 6, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Canaan, he was a son of the late Spurgeon and Luvilla (DeMond) Whalen. He had been employed in farming and later with the Department of Highways, from where he retired. He enjoyed woodworking, especially carving axe handles and wooden spoons. He also enjoyed spending time with the guys at Burger King. He is survived by a son, Darren (Darlene), Canaan; a brother, William, Kentville; a grandson, Joshua; two sisters-in-law, Rosie Whalen, Kentville and Eileen Whalen, Wolfville; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Myrtle Barnes; three sisters, Myrtle Parker, Edith Bent and Evangeline “Eva” Dauphinee; three brothers, Elbert, Walter and Renford. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008, Reverend Robert Billings and Reverend Barbara Durling officiating. A private family burial will take place in the Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. Family flowers only, by request. June 1 to June 7, 2008 continued ROBINSON, Frank Kenneth – 89, of Welton’s Corner, NS passed away Sunday, June 8, 2008 in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Burlington, Kings County, he was a son of the late Ralph and Rachel (Parker) Robinson. Frank was a farmer all his life having both dairy and beef cattle and did a lot of farm work using horses. For several winters Frank and his horse team worked in the lumber camps for Mersey Pulp and Paper, as well as other places. He was also in the Rodeos and chuck wagon races in the Valley area in the 1950's. He had apple orchards and was a school bus driver. Frank also was a dump truck operator and used to salt roads for the Department of Transportation. He loved horses and enjoyed going to horse pulls at various exhibitions. Frank was a champion plowman in the horse plow competition and travelled and competed in New Brunswick. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Spinney; sons, David (Deborah Giles); Ronald, all of Welton’s Corner; nieces, Christine, Janet, Margaret, Jean and nephew, Terry. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Alvin Parker Robinson and sister Margaret Warner. Visitation was held 7-9PM Tuesday, June 10 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main St., (902) 825-3448 where the funeral service was held 11:00AM Wednesday, June 11, Rev. Leon Langille officiated. June 1 to June 7, 2008 continued Dorothy Elizabeth Carslaw, 84, of Smith’s Cove and Tideview Terrace, Digby, passed away on Monday, June 2, 2008, in Annapolis Royal Hospital, Annapolis Royal. Born in New Germany, she was raised in the loving care of her stepmother, Roxanna Moore and family of West Paradise. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, John Wallace Carslaw. She was a proud veteran of the Second World War, a hair dresser and a fashion store clerk, but most of all she was a loving wife and mother Dorothy is survived by daughters, Wanda (Kevin) MacEacherm Delaps Cove; Janet (Robert) Fulmer, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Patrick (Karna) Wright, Tony (Dianna) Wright, both of Bear River; Christie (Steve) Scott, Pennsylvania; and great-grandchildren, Spencer Wright, Bear River; and Hannah and Brian Scott of Pennsylvania. Cremation has taken place, A memorial service will be held June 28 at 2 p.m. in Smith’s Cove Baptist Church, with Pastor Mark Cress officiating. A private family interment will follow. June 1 to June 7, 2008 continued PURDY, Arthur Loran - 84, Cleveland Road, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, June 5, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born July 28, 1923, in Rockville, he was a son of the late Bernard L. and Harriet (Quinlan) Purdy. He was a veteran of the Second World War, having served in Canada, the United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean, and Continental Europe as Gunner in the 1st Division Canadian Army Overseas 3rd Brigade. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Doreen (Rhyno) (Pictou) Purdy, Cleveland Road; daughters, Rose (Warren) Surette, Brazil Lake; Susan Grant, Yarmouth; Patsy (Jim Baxter) Deveau, Kentville; Margot/Lanie (Ron) Smith, Alberta; Marla Dulong, Yarmouth; son, John (Susan) Purdy, Arcadia; stepsons, Vaughn (Susan) Pictou, South Ohio; Michael (Wendy) Pictou, Yarmouth; daughters from a previous marriage, Eleanor (Richard) MacIsaac, Rockville; Arthurina (Brian Morton) Purdy and Victoria (Mitchell) Pothier, Yarmouth; brothers, Herbert and Dow (Emma) Purdy, Rockville; 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Margaret (Bryceland); brothers, William, Keith, Frank Sr., Bernard/Lockie, Richard, Eugene, Bruce; sister, Lydia Hurlbert. June 1 to June 7, 2008 continued JACQUARD, Mary "Hilda" - 87, Yarmouth. Gone to live with Our Lord. It is with great sadness that the family of Mary "Hilda" Jacquard announce her passing in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Friday, June 6, 2008. Born on May 29, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Vivian Pothier. Hilda loved to travel, listen to music, and play cards and bingo. Most of all, she loved her family. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother whose love was returned tenfold. She was loved by all who entered her life. She will be sadly missed by all of her family and many friends. Hilda is survived by son, Paul (Ruby) Jacquard, Red Deer, Alta.; daughters, Vivian, with whom she resided in Yarmouth; Cindy (Bill) Adams, Goldsboro, N.C.; granddaughters, Chiara (Dave) White, Red Deer, Alta.; April Jacquard, Calgary, Alta.; Lisa (Ron) Lassiter, Heather (Robbie) Andrews, all of Wendell, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Matt and Ashley White, Kelsey and Trevor Jacquard, and several nieces and nephews. She was also looking forward to the arrival of great-granddaughter, Hayden Andrews of Wendell. Hilda was predeceased by husband, Walter "Ernest" Jacquard; brothers, Walter, William and Duke Pothier. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Born in Yarmouth on October 26, 1932, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Annie (Rogers) Thibodeau. Surviving are daughter, Gwendolyn (Daniel) Yacobino, Hamilton, Ont.; sons, Timothy Hough (Denise), Hamilton, Ont.; Keith Hough (Jennifer), Hamilton, Ont.; brothers, Douglas (Joyce), Brooklyn; Nelson (Margaret), South Ohio; Richard (Diane), Brooklyn; Roderick (Heather), Brooklyn; sister, Florence Thibodeau, South Ohio; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. Frances was predeceased by husband, Leonard Hough; sister, Pearle; brothers, Willard and Edward. The family would like to thank Dr. Friel and the third floor nursing staff at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. Born in Kemptville, she was a daughter of the late Harry C. and Mabel (Hatt) Prosser. A resident of Port Maitland all of her adult life, she was a member of Port Maitland United Baptist Church, a life member of W.M.S., and a telephone operator for MT&T for 17 years. She is survived by daughter, Sandra Hamilton; son, Peter (Mary) Bethune; grandchildren, Michael (Trish) Moses, Marsha (Peter) Greeno, Melanie (Jim) Mosher, Todd (Louann) Bethune, Holly (Ted Amirault) Bethune; stepgrandchildren, Greg (Sarah) Williams and Asheley (Jason) Quinn; great-grandchildren, Madison, Jillian, Samantha, Nicole. Nathan, Jack, Hannah, Marlee, Austin, Mackenzie, and Alina. She was predeceased by husband, John H. Bethune; sister, June Prosser Smith; granddaughter, Margo; son-in-law, Garth Hamilton. June 1 to June 7, 2008 continued POTHIER, Donald J. (Donny “The Buck”) – 56, Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born June 13, 1951 in Yarmouth, he was a son of Catherine (Pothier) Pothier, and the late Vernon S. Pothier. Donny was a fisherman for most of his working life. He enjoyed spending time at his camp on Kemptback Lake, and sailing on his boat, the “Dutch Prince”. We will always remember him smoking his big cigar. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 6505 Wedgeport. Besides his mother Catherine, he is survived by sisters, Jeannine (Jim) Quick, Raynardton; Yvette (Kenny) d’Entremont, Lower West Pubnico; Lise (Kent) Surette, Middle West Pubnico; nieces and nephews, Matthew and Meagan Hemeon, Julien and Jocelin d’Entremont, Robert and Chantal Surette. Visitation took place from 2 to 4 and again from 7 to 9 on Monday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Wedgeport. The funeral mass was held at 11 AM, Tuesday, June 10 from Saint Michael’s Catholic Church, Wedgeport, Father Wieslaw Papgua officiated, assisted by Msgr. Gerald LeBlanc. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Wedgeport Sport Tuna Fishing Museum, or to Saint Michael’s Parish Cemetery.
