Howard “Howie” William Dill, age 73, of Windsor, Hants County, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor, with his children by his side. Born July 22, 1934, in Windsor, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late William & Gladys (Parker) Dill. Howard was a life long farmer raising cattle, fruit and vegetables. He enjoyed competing at several exhibitions and fairs, and was a former President of the Hants County Exhibition. He praised his early days as a 4-H member, where he established the skills necessary to develop his world-renowned “Atlantic Giant” pumpkins and seeds, which have sired every world record pumpkin since 1979. While growing up, Howard became an avid and passionate sports fan, especially hockey. He spent his lifetime collecting and preserving hockey memorabilia. His historical knowledge and memory of hockey, at all levels, was amazing to all who visited him. Howard was a founding member of the Windsor Hockey Heritage Society and instrumental in preserving and promoting Windsor as the Birthplace of Hockey. January 5, 2002, Long Pond, located on the Dill farm and the Town of Windsor, hosted CBC’s Hockey Day in Canada. Over the years, Howard has received numerous awards including Canadian Achiever; N.S. Tourism Ambassador; Canadian Society for Horticultural Science; Guinness World Record holder for his Giant Pumpkins; inductee of N.S. Sports Hall of Fame; The Paul Harris Fellowship; honorary associate of the N.S. Agriculture College; and many achievements from various International pumpkin organizations. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Hilda P. (Levy) Dill; sons, Danny (Carol) Dill; Andrew (Tanya) Dill; daughters, Maureen Dill (Robin); Diana (Scott) MacDonald, all of Windsor; stepson, Eddy (Crystal) Levy, Lr. Vaughans; grandchildren, Alex and Larah Anctil; Michael and Alison Dill; Nathan Dill; sisters, Maxine (Sam) Pelletier, Niagara Falls, Ontario; Margaret Curry, Windsor; special niece, Linda Skelhorn; brother-in-law, Gordon (Karen) Levy, Lr. Vaughans; sister-in-law, Doris Davidson, Truro; former brother-in-law, Edward Trinacty, Windsor; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, William and Gladys (Parker) Dill; and by brothers-in-law, Norman Horne and Leon Curry. Visitation was 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, May 23, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Funeral service was 2:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2008, at the Windsor United Church, 613 King Street, Windsor. The Rev. Bill Gibson and Mr. R. Lindsay Rankin officiated. Interment was at the Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor, followed by a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion building, Empire Lane, Windsor. Norma May Peach, 78, of Three Mile Plains, Hants County, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2008, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born September 17, 1929, in Windsor, she was the daughter of the late Alonzo and Ruby (Benjamin) Flynn. She loved her two cats, Lucky and Hillary; also her ferret, Snowflake. An avid bingo player, she enjoyed doing her weekly crossword puzzles, and going to town to shop with her sisters and Alice. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and will be sadly missed. She is survived by her son, Derek, Three Mile Plains; former daughter-in-law, Patricia Flynn, Gaspereau; grandchildren, Aimee Keddy; Tammy, Amanda and Celina Flynn; great-grandchildren, Meagan Keddy; Casey Keddy-Smith; sisters, Shirley (Ervin) Thompson, Newport Station; Eileen Beaton, Newport Station; brother, Ervin (Mildred) Flynn, Manitouwadge, Ontario; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Earlston Stanley Peach; brothers, Walter, Arnold and Morton Flynn. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. GIBSON, Goldie Agnes, age 80, of Newport Station, Hants County, passed away peacefully Monday, May 19, 2008, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. A kind and honourable lady born December 16, 1927, in Belmont, Hants County, she was the daughter of the late Marjorie Stillman. During her younger years she had many jobs in Windsor including working at the Hants Community Hospital, the Windsor Textile Mill and with Kings - Edgehill School, before she decided to stay home and become a full time mother and homemaker to her children. She enjoyed living in her home, where she loved to garden and spend time with family and friends. If the opportunity arose to go shopping or to go for coffee, she would be there. Surviving are son, Dan (Katherine) Gibson, Stony Plain, Alberta; daughters, Heather (David) Porter, Newport Station; Darlene (Clifford) Power, Lower Burlington; grandchildren, Larissa and Heather Gibson; Jeremy (Susan) Porter; Everette (Jamie Flynn) Porter; Bobby and Danny Gibson; Tanya Wilson; Julie Power (Dennis Bedford); Kyle Power; also 7 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Goldie was predeceased by her husband, Robert Gibson; son, Dowe Gibson; sister, Marie Thompson. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Everyone was welcomed and joined the family Friday, May 23, 2008, from 2 - 4 p.m. at the Three Mile Plains Community Hall, to celebrate her life. WHITE, Mildred Mae - 89, Tidal View Manor, passed away May 21, 2008, in the manor. Born in Bridgetown, she was the daughter of the late Jean Martin and foster daughter of Belle (Grant) Crosby who lived in Brenton. Mildred was a member of the Yarmouth Wesleyan Church, an avid reader, and homemaker most of her life. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Robert; daughter, Sandra (Robert) Brannen, Fredericton, N.B.; grandson, Jeffrey Brannen, Fredericton, N.B.; She is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Visitation was held Friday, May 23 from 7-9 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, where funeral service was held Saturday, May 24 at 2 p.m., Pastor Jim Agrell officiated. BAKER, F. Joan - 71, Sandford, Yarmouth Co., passed away May 23, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Yarmouth on November 20, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Norman S. and Rita (Nickerson) Gray. Joan volunteered countless hours at the veterans' wing and information desk at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. A longtime bowler, she was well-known throughout the province. In previous years, she enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens and everything to do with the outdoors. She worked tirelessly in her kitchen for her eagerly anticipated family meals. Joan enjoyed traveling, most recently having spent New Year's in Nassau, the Bahamas. Surviving are her husband of 52 years, George; daughters, JoAnne Baker (Craig), Yarmouth; Jody Nickerson, Barrington, Shelburne Co.; son, Geoff (Shelley), Arcadia; brother, Paul Gray, Moncton, N.B.; sister, Norma Gray, British Columbia; granddaughter, Kristi Baker, and grandson, Matthew Baker. Heartfelt thanks and unlimited appreciation are extended to the fourth floor staff at Yarmouth Regional Hospital, who went above and beyond. Arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth. There was no visitation or funeral service at Joan's request. SAWLER, Lillian “Pill” – of Wilmot, NS passed away Friday, May 23rd, 2008 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born July 2, 1907, Lillian was an exceptional loving and caring mother to Marion (George) Kriisk, Wilmot; Grandmother to Lisa (Dave) MacDougall, Middleton; Kim (Wayne) Buchanan, Rothesay, NB; Shelley Tremblay, Calgary and Andrew Tremblay and great grandmother to Jodi, Erik, Zoe and Brian. She was predeceased by her husband Wesley, daughter Joyce and her brothers and sisters. Lillian was very active throughout her life in church activities, Red Cross, Wilmot Women’s Institute; volunteering a great deal of time and up to her death had very good health and able to remain in her own home with a caregiver. She was loved by all who knew her and will be sadly missed by her family, relatives and friends. By request, there will be no visitation. Funeral service was held Wednesday, May 28 in the Kingston United Church. Rev. Michael Mugford officiated. Interment will be in Wiswall Cemetery, Wilmot. By request, family flowers only. Loran Maxwell Gidney, 55, of Mink Cove, Digby County. It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of their dearest husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. Loran passed away peacefully in Digby General Hospital on May 23, 2008. He was a son of Wilfred Jr. and LaReta Gidney. Loran worked with his father at Gidney Fisheries for 22 years, spending the last five years self-employed in his shop at home. He was a past member of Digby Pines Golf Club and loved the game of golf. He was an honest, kind, man who never refused to help anyone who needed a hand. He loved his family and friends and was so proud to finally become a ‘grampie’ to Benjamin and Isis. He loved to work with his hands and spent most of his days and nights in his shop repairing and painting new and antique vehicles. No job was ever too big or too small and was always done to perfection. He will be remembered for his kind and generous heart and his natural sense of humor. He will be forever missed by his wife of 36 years, Marie (Nickerson) Gidney; daughters, Jill (Mark), Annapolis Royal; Lori, Edmonton, Alta.; Rebecca, St. Eustatius; Joanne, Halifax; grandchildren, Ben and Isis. He is also survived by brothers, Bruce (Shelley), Hill Grove; Barry (Lorraine), Toronto; sister, Dorothy (Ron) Nichols, Lighthouse Road. Murray Allen Reeves – 73, of the Forties, Lunenburg County, passed away suddenly, Friday, May 23, 2008 at his home. Born in the Forties, he was the son of the late Ira Gordon and Bertha Maude (Bezanson) Reeves. During his life, Murray was an avid woodsman and advocate of sustainable forestry practices. He owned and operated a forestry, sawmill and Christmas tree business for over 50 years. He was a member of the Maritime Lumber Bureau, the Forest Products Association of Nova Scotia and a past director of the Lunenburg County Christmas Tree Producers Association. Murray enjoyed spending time with his family and many friends and he loved being outdoors with his face in the breeze, trees within reach, mud on his boots and sawdust and fir needles in his pockets. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary G. (Windrow); his children, Debbie Reeves (Bill Falkenham), Chester Basin; Ruth Veinotte (Ellison), Mill Road; John Reeves (Jeanette), Forties; his grandchildren, Jenny, Michael and Matthew Reeves, Andrew and Jesse Veinotte; his great grandchildren, Emma, Riley and Gracie Reeves; a sister, Annie Brown, Grand View Manor, Berwick; a sister-in-law, Bettylu Reeves, Forties; a brother-in-law, Lowell (Christel) Windrow, Kentville; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Gordon Reeves; a sister, Joyce (Dean) Rafuse; a brother-in-law, Fayne Brown. Visitation was held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, May 26, 2008 in St. Augustine’s Anglican Church, Forties, where the funeral service was held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008, Reverend Leonard Bednar officiating.
