Prepare at home for safe travel
By Dawn Thomas
Summer vacations should be safe and stress-free. Whether you are traveling nearby for a couple of nights away by car, or flying overseas for an extended period of time, there are some worthwhile tips to consider to make your trip safe and hassle free.
The more you plan in advance, the more you will enjoy your time.
The safest way to make your travel arrangements is with a travel agent. They deal with only reputable tour operators and will be able to advise you on special travel needs you may not have considered. If something should go wrong on route, they will participate in finding solutions and help as you need while you travel.
Some package tours are not what they appear. Seniors are targets to these scams. Travel agents will be most familiar with companies and past problems. They can assist you with the appropriate health, medication and mobility issues you should consider.
It is absolutely vital that you have the appropriate medical insurance when you travel out of the country. Do not assume you medical plan covers you should emergencies happen. Double-check also with your credit card company for its coverage. Carry the emergency assistance provider information with you everywhere you go.
Learn as much as you can about your destination. Select your travel route in advance and be street smart. Tourists are lucrative targets for thieves and con artists. Project confidence and be aware of your surroundings. Never leave your luggage unattended. Keep your money, keys and identification on your person. Bags can be easily snatched or forgotten.
It is best to lock important papers in hotel safe deposit boxes. Have copies of passport and identification separate from originals. You should not carry all originals together to avoid losing them.
Pack wisely, and take only what you need. Leave valuables at home. Being overburdened with bags makes you a target and tires you easily. Wear comfortable clothing, with a good pair of shoes, sunscreen and drink plenty of water. Make sure you get enough sleep. Allow yourself time and avoid rushing. Try not to pack too much into your days.
Bring extra prescription medication with you just in case. It is best to keep it in original labeled vials. For diabetics, check in advance how to stagger medication if you are going to another time zone. Allow at least a day for jet leg and try to set your eating and sleeping schedule according to local time.
If you are traveling by car, lock your luggage and valuables in the trunk, and keep doors locked. Park in well lit areas. Avoid traveling at night and stay out of isolated areas.
While you are away, make sure your house looks lived in. Have a neighbour cut the grass, check the mail and put out the garbage. Consider leaving a light on and a radio playing. It is best not to advertise your absence.
Happy vacationing!
