Probation for assault

West Brooklyn resident Claude Asahel West, 48, pleaded guilty May 14 to committing assault.

Judge Claudine MacDonald suspended sentencing on West for the offense and imposed a term of six months’ reporting probation on him.

West committed the assault in West Brooklyn between Nov. 22 and Dec. 23, 2007.

Breach brings probation term

Kentville resident Douglas Robie Messom, 38, pleaded guilty May 13 to failing to comply with a court undertaking.

Judge MacDonald suspended sentencing on Messom for the convictions and imposed a term of one-year reporting probation on him. Conditions include Messom taking any recommended counselling. Messom committed the breach in Wolfville Jan. 18.

Short sentence for breach

Kentville resident Robin Kristie Millett, 31, pleaded guilty May 13 to failing to comply with a recognizance order.

Judge MacDonald sentenced Millett to one day in custody, deemed served by her court appearance. Millett committed the breach in North Kentville Dec. 17, 2006.

Granted conditional discharge

Judge MacDonald granted a conditional discharge to New Minas resident Cody James Taylor, 18, on a charge of committing mischief involving property damage exceeding $5,000. The discharge is pending one-year reporting probation.

Probationary conditions include Taylor taking any recommended assessment, counselling or treatment; refraining from possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages or non-medically prescribed drugs; and having no unnecessary contact with anyone with a criminal, youth of drug record.

The charge stemmed from a Sept. 14, 2007, incident in New Minas.

Convicted automatically

Judge Alan Tufts convicted automatically Wolfville resident Ann Marie Kean, 46, May 5 on a charge of failing to stop at a stop sign, contrary to the MVA.

The judge fined Kean $50 plus a $7.50 victim surcharge and $107 in costs.

Police laid the charge in Wolfville March 13.

CSO suspended

A Waterville man will be in custody for the next while because the court has suspended his conditional sentence order (CSO).

Daniel Wayne Surette, 20 admitted in Kentville provincial court May 22 to breaching conditions of his CSO of Jan. 29. Judge Tufts suspended the CSO for six weeks.

Surette breached the CSO in Berwick May 16, when he possessed or consumed alcoholic beverages, had alcoholic beverages in his home and breached visitor restrictions.

The January 29 CSO and probation were for thefts and breaches in the Berwick and Waterville area, mostly last August.

Find for breathalyzer offense

May 22, Judge Tufts fined Wolfville resident Monalesa Jane Schofield, 42, $850 plus a $127.50 victim surcharge, or 15 days’ custody on willful default; for having care and control of a vehicle while her blood/ alcohol level exceeded the legal limit.

Schofield committed the offense in Gaspereau Feb. 12, when police found she had blood/ alcohol readings of 180 and 160 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80 mg/100 ml.

Schofield pleaded guilty to the charge March 25. Upon the plea, the court also prohibited her from driving in Canada for a year. The Nova Scotia Registry of Motor Vehicles will ban Schofield from driving in the province for at least a year.



Fined for shoplifting

Judge Tufts found Kentville resident Sonia Lynn Paredrakos, 43, guilty May 22 of shoplifting from a New Minas department store.

The judge fined Paredrakos $250 or three days in custody on willful default.

Paredrakos committed the theft Nov. 1.

Unlawfully stored a firearm

Judge Tufts fined Coldbrook resident Bruce Nathan Bezanson, 39, $150 plus a $22.50 victim surcharge, or two days’ custody on willful default; for unlawful storage of a firearm.

The judge also forfeited the weapon.

Bezanson committed the offense in Coldbrook Dec. 17, 2007, and pleaded guilty Feb. 12.

In other court matters

Counsel for Kentville resident Jeffery Gillis Kennedy, 27, pleaded guilty on his behalf May 5 to driving 31 kilometres per hour or more in excess of the posted speed limit, contrary to the MVA.

Judge Tufts fined Kennedy $250 plus a $37.50 victim surcharge and $107 in costs and suspended his license from May 12-19. Kennedy committed the offense on Highway 101 near Avonport Oct. 6, 2007.



Judge MacDonald found Berwick resident Robert E. Best, 48, guilty May 5 of operating an off-highway vehicle without a permit, contrary to the Off-Highway Vehicle Act.

The judge fined Best $130 plus a $19.57 victim surcharge and $107 in costs.

Best committed the offense in Berwick Jan. 5.



Judge MacDonald denied a remission of penalty request and fined Centreville resident George E. Wilbur, 18, $50 plus a $7.50 victim surcharge and $107 in costs for not using an available seatbelt, contrary to the MVA.

Wilbur committed the offense in Port Williams Feb. 20 and pleaded guilty to the charge April 21, when he requested the remission.
