May 11 to May 17, 2008 continued Joan Elizabeth Ferguson-Hunt, age 74, of Maitland, Hants County, passed away Monday, May 12, 2008, in Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow, after a lengthy illness. Born September 24, 1933, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Evelyn (Frank) Ferguson, Hantsport. Joan was a woman with a huge heart, as was shown with her many adopted pets. She loved gardening, and won awards for her rose bushes. She also loved fishing and anything to do with being outdoors. She is survived by her daughter, Judy MacAulay, Hantsport; son, Leigh (Wanda) Hunt, Dartmouth; and life long friend, Rita Edwards; grandchildren, Matthew and Andrew Hunt; Craig (Marci) MacAulay and Tracie MacAulay; great-grandson, Lawson MacAulay. Cremation has taken place. There was no visitation by request. A memorial service was 10 a.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, 194 King Street, Windsor. The Rev. Michael Boyd officiated, followed by a reception at the Lindsay Family Reception Centre. Interment will be at a later date, in the Riverbank Cemetery, Hantsport. May 11 to May 17, 2008 continued Lewis George Conley, age 70, of Ste. Croix, Hants County, passed away surrounded by his family Sunday, May 11, 2008, in the V.G. Site, Q.E.II Halifax. Born June 7, 1937, in Walton, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late George and Mida (Thomas) Conley. Lewis was a miner, and he loved hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife, Rose (DeMont) Mosher; four sons, Steven (Gloria) Conley, Beaverbank; Gerry (Carol) Conley, Shubenacadie; Tim (Roxanne) Conley, Sackville; Danny (Darlene) Conley, Shubenacadie; daughter, Paula (Henry) Lake, Cambridge; six grandsons, two granddaughters, and two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Margaret (Dick) Buchanan, Coldbrook; Dorothy Burgess, Falmouth. He was predeceased by a half-sister, Marguerite Lake, Bramber; brother-in-law, Harris (Bob) Burgess. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request. A public graveside service was 2 p.m. Thursday, May 15, 2008, at the Ste. Croix Cemetery, St. Croix, where everyone was welcomed to attend. The Rev. Karen Pearce officiated. May 11 to May 17, 2008 continued WALKER, Jean Mary, 79, of Martock, Hants County, passed away Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born November 9, 1928, in Lower Vaughan’s, Hants County, she was the youngest daughter of the late Fred and Frances (Redden) Smith. Jean loved all her family, and enjoyed playing her guitar and sharing her music with one and all. She loved to cook and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her children, Barney (Chris) Walker, Martock; Donna (Ralph) Spence, Ellershouse; Darlene Jamieson, Kentville; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; sister, Emma Patterson, Martock; sisters-in-law, Lois Smith, Lower Vaughan’s; Doris Smith, Musquodoboit; several nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Joseph “Joe” Walker; brothers, Maynard, Russell and John Smith; sister, Alma Sanford; sister-in-law, Annie Smith; brothers-in-law, Lloyd Sanford and Carl Patterson. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Friday, May 16, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. May 11 to May 17, 2008 continued DOUCETTE, Regina Pearl – 91, Quinan, Yarmouth Co. It is with great sadness that the family of Regina announce her passing on Friday, May 16, 2008 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. She has gone to her eternal rest with her beloved husband, Lezime. She was born in Wedgeport on December 28, 1916, the daughter of Charles and Mary (Saulnier) Cottreau. Throughout her life she was very active in the community and was renowned for her cooking, baking and sewing abilities. She was Secretary of Trustees of the West Quinan School for many years. In 1953-54, she administered and supervised correspondence courses to Grades 4 to 8 at West Quinan School. She dedicated many hours to her parish church and her many talents to the Quinan Church Picnic. Having a compassionate and caring nature, Regina was a kindly caregiver to four elderly people, including her inlaws and welfare children who needed a loving home. For several years she was employed at Bonda Textiles and worked for 13 years at Ferguson’s Tailor Shop in Yarmouth. She was affectionately known as Tante Regina by many and will be fondly remembered for her contagious laugh and wonderful sense of humour. She will be sadly missed by her sister, Genevieve Fitzgerald, Yarmouth, as well as numerous nieces and nephews, her many friends, as well as her friend and caregiver, Nettie Doucette. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Lezime; sisters, Florence, Mabel, Jane, Nellie, Lena, Mathilda, Tracey, Beatrice; brothers, Wallace, Clifford, Freddie, Georgie, Andrew, Willie, Arthur, Jean-Baptiste and Gerald. Visitation took place from 7 to 8 Saturday evening, and again on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9, with prayers at 8 PM Sunday, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10:30 AM Monday, May 19 from Saint Agnes Catholic Church, Quinan, Father Crepin Khonde officiated, with interment in the parish cemetery. Born in Sable River, he was a son of the late Oscar and Mary Lillian (Snow) Belong. Sam was a family person and loved all his family. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors and telling stories. He was an avid card player. Sam had a hunting lodge called the “Buck-Up-Lodge. He loved to cook and made the “best biscuits”. He enjoyed talking to his friends on the telephone. He had a good sense of humor and loved the stray cats in his neighbourhood. He was very set in his ways. May 11 to May 17, 2008 continued LEAMAN, William Arthur “Bud” - 77, of Labelle, Queens County, passed away suddenly in West Caledonia on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Born in Hibernia, Queens County, he was the son of the late William H. and Gertrude M. (Wentzell) Leaman. Bud worked at Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited, Brooklyn for 36 years, retiring in 1991 from the Mechanical Department as Millwright Foreman. He also served on the Mersey ships; S.S. Markland, S.S. Vinland and S.S. Packard. He was a former employee for Maritime Accessories, Halifax working as a machinist. He served as director and then as president for fourteen years with Rossignol Credit Union and as a director for North Queens Credit Union. He served on the executive for Local 141. Bud was a very active member of the Provincial and Federal Progressive Conservative Party. He was also well known for his sales and service with Electrolux and Singer. Bud was Past Master for Prince of Wales Lodge # 29, A.F. & A.M., Milton and was Chaplain for Arbutus Chapter # 30 Order of the Eastern Star, Milton. He was a loyal and honest man, always eager to help his family, friends or strangers. Bud will be truly missed by all those whose lives he has touched. He is survived by his wife Fern (Getson); daughters: Sally (Stacy) Kaulback of Milton, Sharon (Harry) Ullock of Windsor, Muriel (Joe) Miller of Milton; son Mark (Margo) of Liverpool; grandchildren: Josh Kaulback, Michael, Jeffrey and Adam Ullock, Paige, Nicole and Amy Mosher, Solomon and Schuyler Vromans, Grace Leaman; his twin sister Betty Dean of Brooklyn and his brother Gerald of Milton. May 11 to May 17, 2008 continued BENT, Esther Evelyn - 95, Annapolis Royal, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Born in Stoneham, Massachusetts, she was the eldest child of the late Roy A. Orde (Milford, Annapolis County) and Olive Dunn (Wakefield, Massachusetts). She is survived by her son Henry, daughter-in-law Margo (Staples), Annapolis Royal, granddaughters Kim Bent (Neill McKay), Jennifer Bent-Richard (John Richard), and great-granddaughter Ali Patricia Bent-Richard, Fredericton; brother Ernest, Parkers Cove, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband Trueman Phinney Bent, Belleisle; sisters Ruth, and Ethel, brothers Everett and Raymond. Esther trained as a nurse in New Jersey, returning to her beloved Nova Scotia, where she held many private positions as a practical nurse. Her culinary skills were applauded by many; especially guests of The Milford House were she worked several seasons as pastry chef. Her apple pies won first prize year after year at the Annapolis County Exhibition. She had a passion for knitting and her mittens and socks were produced by the hundreds and distributed worldwide. Always active in the community, she was a 4-H leader, past President of the Belleisle Women’s Institute, member of the Granville Center United Baptist Church, a Dominion Life Member of the Women’s Missionary Society, a Life Member of the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary Port Royal Branch No. 21, and Past Noble Grand of the Unity Rebekah Lodge No. 12. She is fondly remembered by the staff and residents of the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home were she was on staff for many years and a resident for the last six years. Esther always said, “Flowers are for the living!” In her memory, brighten a loved one’s day with a bouquet. Donations in her memory may be made to Annapolis Royal Community Health Center or the Granville Center United Baptist Church. In respect of her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 14th, at the Annapolis Royal Nursing Home, Rev. Eugene Foster officiating. Interment will be in the Wadeville Cemetery, Granville Center, family only. Arrangements are under the direction of Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Annapolis Royal.
