It’s crunch time in the Valley High School Rugby League, with playoff match-ups having been determined and the league semi-finals and finals set for this week.
Ironically, the playoff qualifiers in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions turned out to be the same four schools: Avon View, Kings-Edgehill, Horton and West Kings.
In boys’ action, top-ranked Avon View will host fourth-seed West Kings Tuesday at 4:15 in Windsor while second-place Horton and third-place Kings-Edgehill will square off at 5 p.m. at Horton.
On the girls’ side, top-ranked Kings-Edgehill will host Horton at 5 p.m. in Windsor and Avon View and West Kings will meet at 5:30, also in Windsor.
The semi-final winners will meet Thursday at the home of the highest finisher in the regular season to determine the league champions and the Western Region representatives at provincials.
In action Thursday, May 22, West Kings clinched fourth place and the final playoff berth with a 22-10 win over Central Kings in Cambridge.
In other action, Avon View completed an undefeated regular season with a 65-3 win over Kings-Edgehill and Middleton blanked Digby 19-0 in a meeting of non-playoff-bound teams.
In girls’ play, Kings-Edgehill officially wrapped up top spot with a 19-10 win over Avon View. Kings-Edgehill finished the season at 9-0-1 and Avon View at 7-2-1.
In other action, Horton blanked Central Kings 22-0 and Middleton and the Avon View ‘B’ girls played to a scoreless draw.
On Tuesday, May 20, the Avon View girls had kept their hopes for a first-place finish alive with a 32-10 win over West Kings.
In boys’ action, Horton and Kings-Edgehill played to a 5-5 tie at Horton, a result that clinched second place (and home field for the playoff semi-final) for the Griffins.
