Democracy at passion series
With his passion for politics John Winters will speak about democracy at the upcoming passion series at the Thomas Raddall Library.

The talk will take place May 27 at 7 p.m.

“The focus will be on democratic systems, because not all democracies are the same,” stated Winters.

He will touch on the electoral process, which is his biggest interest.

He also knows since 1960 Nova Scotia has held 14 elections.

One of his concerns about democracy, which he will discuss, is how wealthy countries are apathetic towards democracy.

“Right now that’s’ happening in a very serious way in Canada,” he noted.

“Here in Nova Scotia we have something called democracy 250, it’s a program to try to entice young people to vote and it claims Nova Scotia has the oldest democracy in North America,” he said. “Completely oblivious to the fact that native populations had democracy before the Europeans ever stepped foot in North America.”

He said he is only speaking at the passion series because he just enjoys talking about democracy.

He wants people to look at our current and question it.

To find out what else Winters may discuss, attend the passion series at the Thomas Raddall Library, May 27 at 7 p.m.
