Three Queens County students going to national skills competition
The Liverpool Regional High School saw gold medals come back with a few students from the provincial skills competition, which moves them onto nationals.

“The year before last we had one gold medal, last year we had two gold medals, this year Queens County has three,” said program support teacher Gerry Mason.

Provincials took place March 19, April 3 and April 25.

“These are not school designed events,” explained Mason, “it’s really a good place for kids to get out and see what the work place is demanding for skills.”

Grade twelve student Cody Hatt won a gold medal along with grade eleven student Michiel DeRoos.

Grade eleven student Sarah Mason won a silver medal in IT software while Kimitaka Oba, also in grade eleven took home bronze in the same category.

Josh Theriault entered the outdoor power and recreation equipment competition and won a silver medal. He is in grade eleven.

Miranda Johnson competed in the women’s appearal design category but was beat by North Queens Rural High School student Jenny Uhlman, said Mason.

Grade twelve student Meagan LeBlanc entered the cooking competition but did not place.

“We have three Queens County students going to nationals,” he continued, May 24 – 29 in Calgary Alberta.”

He will chaperon the group.

“There’s only 15 secondary school events, so Queens County are representing three out of 15, so that’s 20 percent of the competition we’ve got covered,” he said.

The South Shore Regional School Board supports the skills competition, noted Mason.

LRHS also took part in the Reach for the top competition.

“For a second year in a row we were runners up at the regional competition,” he stated, “and for a second year in a row we were sixth place at the provincial competition.”

Five students competed in the event, Cody Hatt, Sarah Mason, Ben and Neal Callaghan and Andy Muise.

“It’s kind of like a Jeopardy type program,” he added. “It’s trivia that involves aspects of mathematics, science, literature, pop culture and it tests students general knowledge.”

Regionals took place in early April with Provincials April 26 and 27 in Truro.
