Ross Creek Centre for the Arts: The Gallery features works by artist Tony Myers’ “Journey to the Border”. His work is drawn from the traditions of Western relief printmaking.

Myers described the painstaking process it takes to create his original works of art during his opening reception May 4. Fifteen relief prints are being displayed until June 22 that range in size from 72” x 27” to the 6.5” x 8” as well as a 25-foot banner border of crows. His work can also be viewed on the website www.secordgallery.com

Gallery is open Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends by appointment or chance.

Ross Creek is seeking volunteers to help celebrate Apple Blossom by assisting with their art tent and with both the children’s parade and the big parade Sat., May 31.

Summer programs at Ross Creek: youth programs with arts, friends and fun will be held for kids aged 5-13 years, as well as teen programs in academies in writing, art, theatre and film.

Junior Counsellor program applications are still being accepted for teens interested in writing, theatre and visual arts.

Adult programs are also being held Saturday afternoons with poetry by Governor General nominated poet Carole Langille and puppetry with Mermaid and Ross Creek aulumnus Alice Green, who has a 20-year history teaching and creating puppets.

Glooscap Elementary School: a Home and School meeting will be held Mon., May 26 at 6:45 p.m., and Tues., May 27; 40 new Primaries will visit the school.

There will be no school for students in Mrs. Champion and Mr. Lightfoot/Rogers Grade 1 classes on that day.

Volunteer Tea: the school will honour volunteers who have assisted students and staff throughout the past year Wed., May 21 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the multi purpose room.

Northeast Kings Education Centre: a Music Parents Association general meeting will be held Tues., May 27 at 7 p.m. in the library. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Spring concert will be Thurs., May 22 at 7 p.m. Music students should arrive by 6:30 p.m. and parents are being ask to provide a ready-to-serve, pre-cut dessert item to sell during the intermission.

A middle school dance will be held Wed., May 28 from 7-9:30 p.m. Grade 8 students from KCA have been invited to attend to allow more socialization between the two schools in preparation for next year.

NKEC is pleased to welcome 11 Colombian Spanish-speaking students who are interacting well with the cultural experience during their four-week educational trip to Canada.

Students achievements: second place winner in the Provincial Call to Remembrance – Royal Canadian Legion Literary and poster contest was Grade 7 student Kylah Lohnes. Michelle Trenholm, Grade 9, and David Acker, Grade 12, won for their essays. Students will each receive a certificate and a cheque and will advance to the National level.

Heritage Fair: Grade 6 students Celie Frank Rogers and Leanne VanVilsteren, in Mr. Blanchard’s class, and Taylor Bennett Fudge and Brandon Baxter in Ms. Vanderweit’s class were chosen to represent NKEC at the AVRSB Regional Heritage Fair Sat., May 3. Honourable mention went to Faith Harrison, Zack Price, Kaileigh Smith, Brittany Upshaw, Kaylie Kenny and Stella Champion Keating.

The overall winner for the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board will travel to the National Heritage Fair in Victoria, BC from July 4-14.

Interchange on Canadian Studies/échange sur les etudes Canadiennes: Ricky Lincoln was selected to travel to Regina to engage in a week-long bilingual forum and will be joined by 260 other students.

Justice Johnstone won first place and Maggie Watson was third in their division during the Kings Archers Spring Shoot.

Adrianna Martin, Amber Rhynold, Rebecca Pineo, and Kelsey Hake won first place at the Provincial Culinary Arts competition, “Ready, Set, Cook” that was held in Dartmouth May 1.

Chris Mitchell, a Grade 10 Exploring Tech student, has just created an amazing Flash game. “Sluggy” maneuvers through six levels of mazes with increased difficulty while collecting pet rocks that were stolen from him and avoiding opposition.

Canning Legion: Wednesday Jam Sessions are held upstairs at the Legion from 7-10 p.m. A canteen is available. Freewill offering and wheelchair accessible. Contact 582-7246 for information.

Karaoke will be held at the Legion with music by Denny Myles, Sat., May 24 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Anyone 19 and older is welcome to attend. Free will offering.

Bookmobile returns to the Canning Lions Hall Tues., May 27 from 7-8 p.m.

Sunday Flea Markets at the Canning Lions Hall: The hall is open to sellers from 6-8 a.m. and buyers from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tables are $5 each and a canteen is available. Contact Don at 678-5525 for details.

A blood collection clinic takes place at the Canning Pharmasave Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8-10 a.m. at a cost of $6. A free monthly cholesterol and blood pressure clinic is also available. Seniors’ day is the last Thursday of the month.

The Cornwallis District New Horizon Seniors’ Group meets each Wednesday from 1:30-4 p.m. at the Lions Hall in Canning. Seniors age 55 and up enjoy an afternoon with a brief business meeting then games like cards, crib and crokinole followed by a light lunch and an occasional day trip. New members welcome. Annual fee only $5.
