Proud, emotional day for relatives of the late Cpl. Frank Forsdike
It was a proud and emotional day for relatives of the late Cpl. Frank Forsdike on Saturday.

Forsdike, of the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles, was lost at the battle of Mount Sorrel on June 2, 1916. His medals, the 1914-1915 Star Medal, the British War Medal and the 1918 Victory Medal, were presented posthumously to his daughter, Florence Layton, Forsdike’s only surviving relation eligible to claim the medals, at a ceremony at the Berwick Royal Canadian Legion Ortona 69 on Saturday afternoon, May 10. Layton now resides at Grand View Manor in Berwick.

LCol. Shawn Matheson, Commanding Officer of the Governor General’s Horse Guards (GGHG), presented the medals to Layton with the assistance of GGHG Regiment Sargeant Major CWO Kevin Bradly and Cpl. John Layton. Master Warrant Officer (Ret’d) Mark Stephens, GGHG Association President, presented Layton with the GGHG Battle Honours.

In turn, Forsdike’s family members presented framed photos of Forsdike on his horse to representatives of organizations that helped make the medal presentation possible, nearly 92 years after Forsdike’s death. Reporter Kirk Starratt was on hand and files the following video package…
