An early morning apartment fire in Bridgetown has left six people temporarily homeless.

Bridgetown Volunteer Fire Department deputy chief Mike Lockett said his department was called to the two-storey complex on South Street, at Carleton Corner at 6:45 a.m. on May 9.

“A tenant woke up and smelled smoke,” said Lockett. “The building sustained heavy damage in the upper storey, and some of the apartments have smoke and water damage.”

All of the building’s six occupants are safe and sound, but it will be sometime before they can return to their apartments.

Three of the tenants have found lodging with friends, and family. As of Friday afternoon, the Red Cross was offering temporary shelter for the remaining three occupants.

The cause of the fire is deemed to be accidental. Lockett added that about 30 volunteer fire fighters from Bridgetown, Lawrencetown, and Annapolis Royal quickly contained the fire within two hours.
