Powerful film

Fundy Film screens 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days, a Cannes Palme D’Or winner. This hard-hitting docu-drama takes place over one traumatic day in the lives of two Romanian students seeking a black market abortion in communist Bucharest of 1987.

While bleak and difficult, this film also “powerfully affirms one's faith in people.”

It screens at the Al Whittle Theatre, Wolfville, Sunday, May 18 at 4 and 7 p.m.

Fundy Film screens Up the Yangtze next week. Director Yung Chang dramatically documents China’s damming of the mythic and majestic Yangtze River and the effect the Three Gorges Dam mega-project has on the people who live along its banks.

It will screen in Wolfville Wednesday, May 21 at 7 p.m. Tickets at $8 will be available 30 minutes before screening. Visit www.fundyfilm.ca or 542-5157.

Book launch

Author John Stiles will launch his new novel at The Wolfville Memorial Library May 16 at 2 p.m.

His hero, Jarod Palmer, is a 32-year-old Toronto writer waiting for his big break — though a small one will do. Taking the Stairs is fast-moving, risky and infectiously fun.

Best covers

South Shore rockers Short Notice are coming to the Valley May 17. They’ll play at the Kings Arms Pub at 9 p.m.

Short Notice aims to make people see why the Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia nominated them as cover band of the year.

Springin' The Blues

The Deep Roots Music Cooperative will present an evening of red-hot blues music May 17.

It will feature multiple ECMA winner Carson Downey and his band, along with local rising stars The Hupman Brothers.

This concert kicks of at 8 p.m. at the Al Whittle theatre in Wolfville. Tickets are on sale either from Just Us or The Odd Book in Wolfville, or at the door for $15. Information: 538-4102.

In Aylesford

The St. Mary’s Concert Series presents country music hall of famer Chet Brown in an old-time music night May 17. He will be joined onstage by David Arenburg, Bonny Daniels, Lois Lutz and Graham Moorehead.

Timely screening

Tonight the Council of Canadians Annapolis Valley Chapter, the Ecology Action Centre, and Citizens Action to Protect the Environment (CAPE) will present the National Film Board production, Uranium.

This film explores the consequences of uranium mining in Canada. There will be a question and answer period following the film. Uranium will be screened Tuesday, May 13 at 7 p.m. in Room 244, Beveridge Arts Centre, Acadia University, Wolfville.

Music at the market

On May 17, George Symonds, a mellow Bermudian musician, will be onstage. In Bermuda, he had his own band where he entertained providing Jazz, Blues, Calypso, and Caribbean music.

On May 24, Emily West and Erin Dalton will entertain and then on May 31, Stable Country Unplugged will perform.
