White Rock news
by Pam Schofield (pamschofield@auracom.com)
Hello, everyone. The weather has been pretty good lately, although the black flies are annoying. I guess that’s the price of warmer weather.
I noticed that the Department of Transportation was out to grade the roads again last week. While doing that, they were nice enough to take away phone service temporarily – ha-ha. Apparently they struck an underground phone line, but Aliant was quick to respond and fix the problem.
The Gaspereau school gym is complete. Branden and Dylan have told me about how many basketball nets it has and that it has a rubber floor. They’re really excited about it. I can’t wait to see it.
The Black River community is now having card parties Tuesday nights at 7:30 p.m. Games started May 6.
These card parties will run until the White Rock community starts again in the fall. There were approximately seven tables in attendance for the first night, which was a great turnout. The cost is $2 per person and everyone is welcome.
For the first night, Sharon Lake won the Ladies’ first prize and Eva Morine won Ladies’ second. Gents’ first went to Frank Spinney and Keith Schofield won Gents’ second. Bruce Long won the low for the evening.
Audrey Keddy won the traveler prize. The door prize went to Carthel Illsley and Ken Long won the 50/50 prize. He graciously gave it back in support of the community hall. So remember everyone; every Tuesday evening until the fall.
Tai Chi classes take place every Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Black River hall. Course is free so come and join in.
Square dancing takes place every Wednesday night at the Black River hall. This event is also free and everyone is welcome to attend.
Games night will take place May 17, from 7-9 p.m. Young and old alike are welcome to attend. The Black River community club meeting will take place May 18 at 7 p.m. Community jam session starts May 10 at 7 p.m. This will take place once a month. Everyone is welcome – bring your instrument and join in.
Laurie Levy will hold an informal discussion about the local history Thursday, May 22 at 7:30 p.m. and the plant and yard sale will be held May 31. Tables at the hall are $5.
Pop, hot dogs and bake table will be available. Call Jack Spinney for more information at 542-1552.
Don’t forget about the get fit night at the White Rock Hall on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Although I haven’t had an opportunity to attend lately, it’s a lot a fun and definitely good for your health. Hopefully I will see you there next week.
Happy birthday to Gordon Spinney, who celebrated May 3. Helen Long celebrated May 4; Ethel Lake – May 8; and Phyllis Young celebrates her 86th birthday May 12.
Quinn Schofield celebrates her birthday May 14 along with Sandy Schofield. John Cudmore will also celebrate May 14.
Remember: On May 20 there will be a concert at the Gaspereau Elementary School. It will take place in the newly completed school gym. Family and community members are welcome to attend a concert featuring Juno nominees, Donna and Andy. The concert will begin at 12:20 p.m. followed by cake.
I think that’s it for this week. I will be back next week and I hope to have more news to share. Have a great week, drive safe and watch for the kids.
