STEPHEN, Norah Elizabeth (MacDonald) - 94 Upper Granville/ Halifax, left this life – as she lived it – “her way”, peacefully and at home on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. Born in Edmunston, NB she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Mary MacDonald. Norah grew up in Antigonish, later moving to Halifax where she graduated from St. Patrick’s High School in 1931. Upon graduation she began a long and illustrious career with the Nova Scotia Civil Service. Married in 1941, she moved with her husband Alan to Windsor Junction and taught school in the community for a year. Despite raising a family of seven she still found time for many activities including her appointment as eastern vice-president of the Canadian Federation of Government Employees Organizations marking the first time in the Federation’s history that a woman had been named to the national executive office. She was very active in the Nova Scotia Poetry Society; Toastmasters; was a founding member of the Bedford Suburban Bowling League and St. Rose of Lima Catholic Social Club. As a two time cancer survivor and advocate, Norah was a dedicated volunteer with the Nova Scotia cancer system for almost 30 years. She was a founding member of both Cancer Care Nova Scotia, and the Nova Scotia Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation, and served on the Boards of both organizations until 2002. In her 90th year she was honored by having the Annual Oncology Scholarships named for her by Cancer Care Nova Scotia. Norah was a fruit cake maker extraordinaire and could make an award winning apple pie or a pan of rolls at a moment’s notice. Norah loved to travel and was comfortable everywhere she went from a sidewalk café in Paris to an open air market in Tijuana or body surfing in Hawaii. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family being predeceased by sister Lilly and brothers Findlay and Alfred. Norah will be missed and lovingly remembered by her children Sidney (Carol), Phoenix, Arizona; Lynn (Jon) Main, Upper Granville; Bruce, Bedford; Greg, Halifax, Michael, Hammonds Plains; John, Japan; 15 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Alan Philip Stephen, son Philip, 1 grandchild and 1 great-grandchild. A testimony to her life can be summed up by a remark she made recently, saying, “I don’t want people to remember what I have done, but rather that they know how thankful I am for everything they did for me”. Visitation was held Friday, May 2, 2008 from 7-9 pm with prayers at 8 pm from the Kaulbach Family Funeral Home, Bridgetown. Funeral Mass was held Saturday, May 3, 2008 at 11:00 am from St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Bridgetown. Fr. Tom McQuade officiated.
