April 27 to May 3, 2008 George DeWitt Gay - 66, of New Minas, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on April 29, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. He endured his illness with a positive demeanor. We are indebted to his spirit and unique force of character that has been an inspiration to us all. Born in Halifax on May 7, 1941, he was the son of the late Maie DeWitt and George Richard Gay. Educated at McGill, Acadia University and McDonald Teacher’s College, he was known for his dedication to students at the schools in which he worked. For much of his teaching career, he taught math at Laurentian Regional High School where he was department head. He also taught at his alma mater, John Rennie High School, Hudson High School, as well as Van Kleek Hill Collegiate Institute. He retired from a 36 yr career in 1998, and moved to the Annapolis Valley in 2001, where he later became a partner in a new business venture, the Apple Valley Driving School. With a great love of travel, George took the opportunity to explore many corners of the world. Sailing, especially with his cousin Peter, was another great passion. He will be fondly remembered by his wife, Yvette LeBlanc; sons, Patrick (Dani) and Geordan, Montreal; daughter Danielle (Gavin) Downing, Guelph, Ont.; step children, Marc, Calgary and Christina Roland, Bedford; grand daughter, Emmy Downing; sisters, Judy Gay, P.E.I., Shirley (Art) Van Winckle, Pembroke, Ont. His family would like to thank the caring staff in the Oncology Unit of the Valley Regional Hospital, as well as Dr. Adam Filipowicz, Dr. Catherine McNally, Palliative Care, and the team of VON nurses and personal care workers for their constant attention to his needs. Friends and family are invited to a visitation which was held from 7-9 p.m. Thursday May 1, 2008 in the H.C. Lindsay Funeral Home 5 Leverett Ave., Kentville, N.S. B4N 2K5 (902-678-2151) from where a memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday May 2, 2008, followed by a reception. Chaplain Jim Norton officiated. Interment took place in the Holy Cross Cemetery. April 27 to May 3, 2008 Laurence “Larry” Mervin Sheridan - 92, Woodville, Kings County. Born in Kentville on November 27, 1915 and passed away at home on Sunday, April 27, 2008. He was the only child of the late Asaph and Effie (Landry) Sheridan. Larry grew up in Canning and was educated there and graduated from high school at the Kings County Academy in Kentville. After completing a Business Course, he operated a service station in Canning for a short time. He married Hilda (Parker) Sheridan on December 21, 1939, and along with her, operated the Parker Family Farm in Woodville, following the death of W. Scott Parker. Larry is survived by his only niece Joanne (Dowell) Pronych, Halifax and Woodville; a grand nephew, Scott Pronych, Halifax; a grand niece, Dr. Gilda Pronych, Newmarket, N.H.; two great grand nieces, Coral Joanne and Zoe Rose, a great grand nephew, Perry Zoel Gouin, all of New Hampshire. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Hilda Harriett. Cremation has taken place. No visitation by request and a private interment will take place at a later date. Everyone is invited to join in a Celebration of Larry’s life at the Woodville United Baptist Church hall on Tuesday, May 6 at 2:00 pm. April 27 to May 3, 2008 ZWICKER, David Lawrence - 78, of Charleston passed away peacefully April 27, 2008 at home. Born in Brooklyn he was the son of the late Roger and Avis Zwicker. David worked as a paper maker at Bowater Mersey Paper Company where he retired in 1988 after 36 years. He was a founding member of the Charleston Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Charleston Baptist Church. David was also a member of the Medway Area Community Association, the Seniors Activity Group and he was very active in the music community. David is survived by his wife Margo Leona (Anthony); daughter Valerie (David) O’Neil of Pleasantville; son Ed (Maureen Rodenhizer) of New Canada; grandchildren Kelly, Joel (Natasha), and Jennifer and great grandchildren Caleb and Sarah. He was predeceased by a brother and a number of sisters. Funeral Service was held Thursday, May 1, 2008 from the Charleston Baptist Church. Rev. Doug Porter officiated. A reception was held following the service at the Charleston Fire Hall. Private family burial was in the New Charleston Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Charleston Baptist Church. April 27 to May 3, 2008 Verna L Myers-Schaffeld, age 89 of Yarmouth died April 28, 2008 in the Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born Sept. 2, 1918 she was the daughter of the late Elijah and Elizabeth (Goodwin) Myers. Verna was a member of the New Life Church, Yarmouth. She loved to garden, she enjoyed travelling. She prayed and loved her family dearly and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren as well. She is survived by her husband, Ralph Schaffeld, daughters Sheila Rodney-Miller of Yarmouth, Amber Robb of Sarnia, Ontario, a son Gary of Sarnia, Ontario. Nine grandchildren; Waverly Rodney, Shelly Rodney, Carrie Deveau, Pamela Spurlock, Sonda Mutch, Michael Miller, Eric Schaffeld, Aileen Johnson, Lauren Robb, and twelve great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband Waverly A. Rodney, son Douglas F. Rodney, brothers Sheldon, Maynard, and Floyd, sisters Beudah (1) Beudah (2). The body was resting at Sweeny’s Funeral Home in Yarmouth where visiting hours were Thursday, May 1, 2008 from 7-9 p.m., funeral service was Friday, May 2, 2008 from Sweeny’s Funeral Home chapel at 2p.m. Daughter Sheila Rodney-Miller officiated. April 27 to May 3, 2008 THIBEAU (LeBLANC), Catherine Bernice “Dickie” – last surviving member of her immediate family, passed away on April 28, 2008, at the Yarmouth Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness, surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Jeremie Emilien LeBlanc and Mary Elizabeth Muise. She was predeceased by her siblings, Mildred, Kenneth, Paul Vincent and Elizabeth, as well as by her husband, George Albert. She is survived by sisters-in-law Barbara and Marjorie. Mourning her passing are her children, Thomas (Marie), Ste. Anne-du-Ruisseau, Mildred (Arthur) Muise, Melbourne; Robert (Theresa), Yarmouth; Willard (Ruth), Victoria, BC; Richard, Yarmouth; Jim (Mary-Lynn), Yarmouth, and Mary (Stephen) Reid, with whom she lived. She is survived by 14 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 9 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Theresa Schnell. Over the years, her skillful hands created beautiful knitting, crocheting and needlework. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles and being with her dog, Tico, who was her constant companion. Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 Tuesday, with prayers at 8 PM, both in H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert Street, Yarmouth. The funeral was held at 10 AM, Wednesday, April 30 from Saint Ambrose Cathedral 43 Albert Street, Yarmouth, Rev. Mr. Stephen Bourque officiated, followed by a reception in the Jubillee Room (basement of St. Ambrose Cathedral). Interment will follow in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Yarmouth. April 27 to May 3, 2008 BAIN, Beatrice "Beatti" - 68, Yarmouth, passed away in Yarmouth Regional Hospital on April 28, 2008. She was the daughter of the late Edith (Cushing) Bain and Gerald Bain. She was an active member of Zion United Baptist Church, Yarmouth County Museum, the Ladies Auxiliary of Yarmouth Regional Hospital, and supported several local organizations. Beatti enjoyed her cottage at Sebim Beach, Shelburne Co., singing and eating out with friends. She had a great appreciation of art with her own private collection. Beatti was a banker and bookkeeper. She is survived by aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral service was held in Zion Baptist Church on Thursday, May 1, at 2 p.m., Rev. Brian Wallace officiated, burial followed in Chegoggin Cemetery. April 27 to May 3, 2008 Seila Louise “Tiny” White – 68, of Greenwood, Kings County, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2008 in the QE II Health Sciences Centre – V.G. Site, Halifax. Born in South Alton, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Grace (Redmond) Ward. She had been employed as the Assistant Manager of Maxwell Shoes in Greenwood for many years. She enjoyed the outdoors, especially birds, flowers and gardening. She also enjoyed working with ceramics, golfing and most recently, quilting. She is survived by her husband, John, Greenwood; three daughters, Cindy (Denis) Lavoie, Montreal, Quebec; Wanda (Scott) Dewling, Barrie, Ontario; Angela Chenier (Steve Bates), Kingston, Kings County; a son, Darren (Tara), Lower Sackville; a sister, Donna (Donald) Chisholm, Cambridge Station, Kings County; a brother, Darrell (Charlotte), Grand Bay, New Brunswick; six grandchildren, Josh, Jacob, Tyler, Mitchell, Alec and Jordan; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, John; two brothers, Percy and Ronald. Cremation has taken place. April 27 to May 3, 2008 JOHNSON, Bethany Anne passed away suddenly on Monday, April 28, 2008 at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital after a life long battle with kidney disease. She was born August 25, 1983. Bethany loved life and cherished every joy that came her way. She was kind, compassionate, living by the motto that no matter how bad things got, someone always had it worse. Bethany had amazing strength and courage, never giving up hope, inspiring many people along life’s journey. She had a great sense of humor, which helped her through many difficult times. She was wise beyond her years and always had the tenacity to stand up for herself, even from a very young age. Bethany loved Winnie the Pooh and Angels, enjoyed coloring, shopping, music, movies, crafts and her family. She is survived by her mother, Kathy Johnson; faithful companion and love of her life, Ryan Cunningham; grandfather, Curt (Bampy) Soley; grandparents, Bobby & Lorraine Goodwin; beloved dog, Brewster; numerous aunts, uncles, great aunts, great uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her father, Darrell Goodwin; grandmother, Annie Soley. Funeral was held on Sunday, May 4, from the H. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington, Rev. Shaun Hatfield officiating. Burial was in the River Dale Cemetery, Riverhead. Born in Lunenburg, she was a daughter of the late Norman and Eva (Spidell) Whynach. She was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #98 Kingston, NS; director of the Kingston Legion Singers and former president of the Aylesford Seniors Autumaires. Theresa was a volunteer pianist for various nursing homes and she played piano for the Kingston Lions Club. She is survived by granddaughter, Rachel Mason, Saint John, NB; grandsons, Garrett Mason, Dartmouth and Charlie Mason, Moncton, NB. She was predeceased by her husband, Milford Phillips; son, Norman (Dutch) Mason; sister, Hilda and brother, Gilbert. Cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
