Rural Women's Day a real Hants County Showcase

Close to 50 women of all ages gathered for Hants County Rural Women’s Day to share fun, learning and camaraderie around this year’s theme, “Hants County Showcase”.

The April 26 event kicked off with a talk by Ellen Simpson, president of the Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia, on her organization’s growing “Buy Local” campaign. Part of the Three Mile Plains community hall was set up to showcase local products and services: from architecture to produce.

One of the day’s organizers, Adrianne McNeil, said, in light of the day’s theme, ”we decided to invite local businesses to put up booths.”

Local expertise was shared on home décor and gardening: Maggie Bell of Windsor’s Revival Decorating Studio and Jerry McInnis of Falmouth’s McInnis Landscaping and Design spoke.

Nutritious snacks, a turkey dinner lunch and a craft workshop led by Nicole Kilfoil Oulton rounded out the day’s events.

Formerly known as Hants County Farm Women’s Day, the event began in 1985. After a short hiatus from 2000-2004, it returned successfully as Rural Women’s Day. Hants County Federation of Agriculture was the main sponsor, with many additional businesses and groups contributing to snack breaks and a door prize.
