April 20 to April 26, 2008 continued KEIRSTEAD, Gordon Richard (Major), 81, of Brooklyn, Hants County, passed away Monday, April 21, 2008, at the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born October 12, 1926, in Sussex, New Brunswick, he was a son of the late Gordon and Helen (Russell) Keirstead. Dick retired in 1978 from the Canadian Armed Forces (RCAF). He was an avid Barbershop Quartet (SPEBSQSA) enthusiast and belonged to the Mill Stream Chorus, Bedford. Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Judith "Judy" (Walker) Keirstead; his children, Christopher Keirstead, Ste-Emelie-de-L'Energie, Quebec; Candace (Daniel) Dion, Halifax; Kristin Keirstead, Halifax; Kurt Keirstead, Edmonton, Alberta; Carol Ann Dill (Paul Mensch), Ellershouse; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Karen Mills. Cremation has taken place, and there was no visitation by Dick's request. A Memorial service was 2 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2008, in Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, 194 King Street. Windsor, followed by a reception in the Lindsay Family Reception Centre. The Rev. E. April 20 to April 26, 2008 continued Muriel Anne “Dewey” Millett – 70, formerly of Gaspereau passed away on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at home. Born on the Gaspereau Mountain, she was a daughter of the late Cyril and Laura (Keddy) Murray. At an early age she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, an illness that she battled with courage throughout her life. Dewey enjoyed traveling and was a lover of flowers, crafts and people. She was always willing to help and would go without in order to give to others. She is survived by four sons, Vaughn (Donna), Kentville; Murray (Suzanne), Port Williams; Tony, Toronto; Troy (Tanya), Gaspereau; four daughters, Vicki (Bryan) Moore, Kentville; Crystal Millett, New Minas; Anne (Travis) Wile, Port Williams; Susan (John) Kenny, Wolfville; a half brother, Clyde Murray, Greenfield, Kings County and a sister, Laureen (Bud) Crowell, Sarnia, Ontario. A special thank you to granddaughter, Sarah Wile for her love, devotion and great care to her Nanny in her time of need. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Basil; a sister, Maxine Hancock; a brother, Cyril “Sonny” and a half sister, Dorothy Brown. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by family request. The graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2008 in the Gaspereau Cemetery, Kings County. April 20 to April 26, 2008 continued PITCHER, Captain Dan - 84, Windsor, Hants Co., formerly of Halifax, passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Wednesday, April 23, 2008, in Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born in Wandsworth, Newfoundland, he was a son of the late Matthew and Winnifred (Paul) Pitcher. Dan was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all. He left school at an early age to go fishing with his grandfather. Dan left Newfoundland in 1946 to begin his journey toward becoming a sea captain. During his fishing career he traveled to many different fishing villages including Mulgrave and Louisbourg, where he raised his loving family. He also had the opportunity to travel to Holland to bring back the Cape Dauphin fishing vessel for the National Sea Products Company. Dan was the top highliner for many years. He later worked for IMP for many years and then went back to work as a captain on the Alfred Needler research boat for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Dan and Mae spent many years in Halifax, retiring to Windsor, where they had resided for the last three years. In his spare time, Dan enjoyed doing needlepoint making sure that all of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren had one, and was currently working on one for his newest great-granddaughter. Dan is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Mae Clark; daughters, Flora (Eli), Wanda (Vincent), Masie (John); grandchildren, Norman (Elizabeth), Rob (Sharron), Terrance (Lisa), Sheldon (Trudy), John-Matthew (Elizabeth), Candace (Brad), Melissa (Mason), James, Jamie (Joe); great-grandchildren, Brandon, Christian, Madison, Page, Liam, Parker, and Ava; brother, Capt. Joe (Janet) Pitcher; sisters, Winnie (Harry) and twins, Ruth and Grace. Dan was predeceased by his daughter, and namesake, Danna; sisters, Edna in infancy and Edna. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 25. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, in Lohnes Funeral Service Chapel, Rev. Jeffrey White officiated. A reception followed in the funeral home's Elmcroft Reception Centre followed by a private family interment in Elm Grove Cemetery, Steam Mill. April 20 to April 26, 2008 continued Alma Blackadar DeLong – died peacefully on Thursday, April 24, 2008 in Kentville, Nova Scotia at the age of 92. She was born in Bear River, Nova Scotia on Sept. 10, 1915 and grew up in New Canada, Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia where she completed her high school education. After normal school education in Truro, she taught briefly in several Nova Scotia schools. In 1939 she went to Nyack Missionary College in Nyack, New York, and following her marriage to Rev. J. Gordon DeLong she traveled to South India as a Baptist missionary, where she and her husband served for 24 years. In 1968 she returned with her husband and family to the Maritimes, where she taught high school in McAdam, New Brunswick for five years. Returning to Nova Scotia in 1973, she lived in Paradise and North Alton, before retiring to Port Williams in 1982. For many years she has been active in the Port Williams community, in particular in the Port Williams Baptist Church. She was an avid gardener and loved flowers. She also loved music and was a voracious reader. Her dedication to her family, her church and community was remarkable and she will be missed by many. She is survived by her husband, her three children (Kenneth, Linwood, and Elaine Murray) and her sister, Vera Jodrey, and her five grandchildren (Christina and Sharon Murray, James, William and Sarah DeLong). Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2008 in the Port Williams Baptist Church, Reverend David Ogilvie officiated. April 20 to April 26, 2008 continued Beverly Crewe – 80, of Wolfville, formerly of New Minas, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2008 in the Wolfville Nursing Home, Wolfville. Born in Plymouth, Massachusetts, she was a daughter of the late Reginald and Jenny (McConnell) Babcock. She spent her younger years in Halifax and later moved to Wolfville. She operated Babcock’s Stationary in both Wolfville and New Minas, retiring in 1986. She was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, Wolfville, where she had been active as treasurer with the U.C.W. She is survived by her husband, Roy, New Minas; a daughter, Susan (Byron) Johnson, Newport, Hants County; a son, David (Donna) Packer, New Minas; a sister, Barbara (Guy) Parlette, Scarborough, Ontario; a brother, Barry (Norma) Babcock, Calgary; five grandchildren, Ian, Claire and Warren Johnson, Stephanie and Krista Packer. She was predeceased by a brother, Bryan. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there was no visitation by family request. A graveside memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 2008 in the Willowbank Cemetery, Wolfville, Chaplain Jim Norton officiated. April 20 to April 26, 2008 continued Owen Donald Stillman - 60, Kentville. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loved one, Owen. Born in Cheverie, Hants Co. he was the son of Dolly (Brown) Stillman and the late Enslie J. Stillman. Prior to retirement he was Foreman several years at National Sea Products, Halifax, and worked in Security and Janitorial Services, the last being in Sydney. Owen trained as a Seaman, and sailed on the Gypsum King, with Fundy Gypsum Co. Some of Owen's many talents were his love of music. He played professional guitar and several other instruments sharing his gift with many including seniors and for fundraisers. Also, woodworking/carpentry. His interests were in history, genealogy, photography and the medical field. In earlier years Owen enjoyed being a Boy Scout Leader and 4H member and continued to appreciate nature and wildlife. Owen deeply loved his family, children, grandchildren who were always held close in his heart and he loved his pal “Keisha”, his husky dog. Owen will be sadly missed by all that loved and knew him. His family can take comfort in knowing that God has brought him home. Besides his mother, Owen is survived by sisters, Carol, New Minas; Gloria, Kentville; children and grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his father; brother, John. Cremation has taken place with no visitation. A memorial service was held Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in Cheverie United Church, Cheverie. April 20 to April 26, 2008 continued WOLFE, Vergil Everett “Vic” – 75 of Meadowvale, Annapolis County, passed away Monday, April 21, 2008 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Milton, Queen’s County, he was the son of the late Vergil and Vernice (MacLeod) Wolfe. He retired from the RCAF after 34 years of service. He was a 50 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. Vic enjoyed organic farming, fishing and refinishing antique furniture. He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret Peterson; daughter, Susan (Eric) Mooers of Courtenay, BC; sons Greg of Courtenay, BC, Bruce of Wilmot; sisters Yvonne (Jim) Freitag of Truro, Dianne (David) Wambolt, Milton, Queens County; brother Maurice (Shirley) Wolfe, Brooklyn, Queen’s County. April 20 to April 26, 2008 continued BROWN, Bertrand Frederick “Bert” - 91, Windsor, formerly of Falmouth. It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of a father and brother on Thursday, April 24, 2008, in Windsor Elms Senior Citizens Home. Bert was the eldest of five children born to the late Fred and Jessie (Curwin) Brown of Hants County. As a young lad, Bert worked in the woods with his father. In 1939 he volunteered for the armed forces and served his country in England, Italy and Holland, first in the artillery and later in communications. A carpenter by trade, he was employed for many years by the Windsor Supply in the sash and door department. He also worked in construction in Halifax and in the maintenance department of the Halifax Infirmary. Bert was well-known as a fine craftsman and was respected for his responsible work ethic. Bert enjoyed the outdoors, manifested in his love of gardening and hunting. He was an excellent marksman. After retiring, Bert took up baking as a hobby, the results of which he generously shared with friends and neighbours. He was known as a prankster and always enjoyed a good joke. He joined the I.O.O.F. Pesaquid Lodge No. 38 and was very proud of his position as Chaplain. Bert was predeceased in 2000 by his wife of 54 years, Ethel Mae (Brown), affectionately known by family and friends as “Jerry”. Together they enjoyed attending flea markets, both collecting and selling. In later years they took lessons in ballroom dancing. He is survived by his only daughter, Dr. Susan Brown, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; sisters, Margaret, Dykeland Lodge, Windsor; Laura (Farr), Old Barns; Jean (Elliott) Daniels, Windsor Forks; brother, Blair (Shirley), Barrington Passage, and 10 nieces and nephews. Appreciation is extended to the doctors and medical staff at Hants Community Hospital, Valley Regional Hospital and the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, as well as the caring staff at the Windsor Elms Senior Citizens Home. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lohnes Funeral Service, 419 Albert St., Windsor (902-798-8317), where the family received visitors from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, April 27, and also where I.O.O.F. Pesaquid Lodge No. 38 conducted a tribute service at 7 p.m. The Royal Canadian Legion, Hants County Branch No. 009, Windsor, conducted a tribute service, followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday, April 28, in Lohnes Funeral Service Chapel, Pastor Craig Faulkner officiated. Born in Milton on February 9, 1926, he was the son of the late Edward Donald and Emma Annie (Faulkner) Manthorne. Hector was employed with Steel and Engine Products, Liverpool for 38 years. He was a member of Milton Christian Church, Disciples of Christ and Prince of Wales Lodge A.F. & A.M., Milton where he received his 50 year jewel. He is survived by his wife Avis Elizabeth “Betty” (Zinck); daughter Louise Yvonne (David) Lewis of Milton; son David Bruce of Western Head; grandchildren: Beverly Jean Lewis and Abigail Ruth Lewis, Matthew David Manthorne and Jenna Elizabeth Louise Manthorne; sisters: Phyllis Moore and Gloria Meers, both of Milton, Elsie (Merrill) Stafford of Bridgewater, Marjorie (Lawrence) Randall of Dayspring, Helen Nickerson of Dartmouth; brother Brian (Phyllis) of Milton. He was predeceased by brothers Edward and Eric. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Chandlers’ Funeral Home, Liverpool. A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 29 in Milton Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. Rev. Jennifer Garbin officiated. Immediately following the service an interment took place in the Milton Community Cemetery.
