Beware of home maintenance cons

Seniors are targeted for a number of reasons. Older people are likely to have accumulated savings over the years. Many are trusting and too kind to say no. Older people are also less likely to do research and are just grateful to have the help.

Con artists also know that seniors are least likely to report fraud because they don’t recognize it or are afraid of what might happen to them if they do report it.

Con artists make money through deception. They lie and mislead. They take advantage of weaknesses such as loneliness and poor health that is often associated with aging.

The 'friendship' con

Dishonest people know how to play the part, become your friend and gain your trust. They may make unannounced visits, call you by name, claim to be working in the neighborhood and claim to offer the best deal if you act now.

The truth could be that they are overcharging, do not plan to complete the work, use shabby or stolen materials, cut corners, offer unfair contracts and expect you to be quiet about it.

So, how can you protect yourself from becoming a victim? How would you know if someone is trying to scam you? You need help with your lawn mowing, raking leaves, and repairing that broken step and just don’t know where to turn.

It is absolutely necessary that you do some research. Get recommendations from family, friends and neighbors about who they are using for their work. Ask for references. The contractor should not a have a problem giving this information if they are trustworthy. Ask a local supply store about contractors you might be considering.

Get estimates from several contractors or workers. This will help you to consider values of different companies. Remember, the lowest price is not necessarily the best price. Go with your instinct.

Avoid pressured offers

Legitimate contractors will not rush you into making a decision. They do not have one-time pressured offers. They don’t need to. Reputable contractors are likely the busy contractors. They will give you more accurate and truthful information.

The general rules in avoiding scams are the same in home maintenance situations. Never open your door to strangers. Allow yourself time to research and make a decision. Never give money up front. Don’t sign anything that you don’t completely understand and don’t be afraid to say no.
