Kings fire lines - as of April 24

It’s the time of year when local fire departments are kept busy with brush and grass fires.

Kentville Chief Shawn Ripley said his department responded to four calls April 20, three in the county and one in town. Although three were minor, one in Upper Dyke was quite serious, as the wind caught the flames and carried them into the back of a barn, which started to burn. The fire also caught onto some tires and auto parts piled there. Canning provided mutual aid.

Ripley said his department responded to three more brush and grass fire-related calls April 21 and one that was rather serious April 23 on Middle Dyke Road: a controlled burn involving a pile of brush that got out of hand. The wind was whipping the flames around and threatened to push the fire across the road. The Port Williams, Canning and Waterville fire departments responded in mutual aid.

Kentville firefighters responded to the scene of a power pole on fire on Brooklyn Street April 24.

New Minas Fire Chief James Redmond reported his department responded to a grass fire near Nova Drive April 23. Arson was the cause.

New Minas firefighters also quickly extinguished a basement bedroom fire on Cloverleaf Drive April 23. The blaze was confined to the room, but there was heavy smoke damage to the home, though no water damage. Cause of the blaze was an overturned candle

Canning firefighters responded to a fire in a compost cart on Cavelle Terrace last week. The fire was accidental in nature.

Wolfville Fire Chief Tim MacLeod said his department responded to a structure fire involving an apartment on Hillside Avenue April 20. Greenwich responded in mutual aid, providing stand-in assistance at the Wolfville hall.

Wolfville responded in mutual aid to Windsor April 22, as that department was busy battling a barn fire.
