Deveau, George Lawrence age 86 of Yarmouth slipped peacefully away from us on April 15 at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Hebron, Yarmouth County, George was the son of the late Clifford and Adele (nee Thibodeau). He is survived by his sister Madeline (Mallett) in Ottawa, sons Gregory and Larry, daughters Susan and Peggy (Brown), grand-daughter Jennifer and great grand-sons Caleb and Colby. He is pre-deceased by his wife Evangeline, and brothers Clifford, Stanley, Fred & Richard. George served Canada with valour in Italy and Africa during World War II and served his community through Canada Post for decades thereafter. He loved the “great outdoors” with a passion rivaled only by his love of people. George shared his smile with everyone he met and filled each meeting with laughter. A proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 61) and Knights of Columbus (Council 2181), he exemplified a full and wondrous life with a tremendous circle of friends and family. Though his bright flame is diminished his light is eternal and will continue to guide us forward. It is with gratitude for his presence in our lives that we bid farewell with love and fondest memory. Visitation was held Thursday, April 17 from 2-4 and 7-9 in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel, Yarmouth, with a Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61 Service at 7:30 followed by prayers at 8:00pm. Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, April 18 at 11 am in St. Ambrose Cathedral, Father John MacPherson officiated. A reception followed in the Jubilee Room. Donations in George’s memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Lung Association and flowers are welcomed to honor and beautify his farewell. MUISE, Ulysses Jean - 85, Tidal View Manor, and formerly of Quinan, passed away peacefully in the home on Tuesday, April 15, 2008. He was born on January 27, 1923 in Quinan, and was the son of the late Pierre Muise and Julie (Doucette) Muise. He was a retired school teacher having taught in many schools throughout Yarmouth County. He was a member of Saint Agnes Parish, Quinan, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Albert Lemenager Council 8988 Tusket, and the Msgr. W. E. Young Fourth Degree Assembly, Yarmouth. He is survived by children, Clinton (Shelley) Muise, West Arichat; Cheryl (Eddie) Madden, Surette's Island; grandchildren, Rose and Everett; great-granddaughter, Crystal Rose; sister Chantal Muise, Quinan; wife, Mary Estella (Jacquard) Muise, Grand St., Yarmouth; stepchildren, Wally (Sue) Thibeau, Franklin, Mass., Carolyn (Jim) Sewell, Norfolk, Mass., Sue (Bobby) Tucci, Franklin, Mass., five step-grandchildren and six step-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, the former Roseanne Vacon; brothers, Abel, Louis, Theodore, and Nazaire; sisters, Emilie and Jeanette. Visitation was from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., on Thursday, April 17, with prayers at 8 p.m., both in H.M. Huskilson's Funeral Home, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, April 18, from Saint Agnes Catholic Church, Quinan, Father Crepin Khonde officiated. Interment followed in the parish cemetery. Elmer Edward Pick – 84, of White Rock, Kings County, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at home. Born in White Rock, he was a son of the late Partlo and Edna (Patterson) Pick. He had been first employed with Municipal Paving in Bedford and later with Clifford Long and Sons Mill in White Rock, from where he retired. He enjoyed hunting and sports, especially hockey. He was an avid fisherman and received many awards and prizes for fishing. He always looked forward to the first of April each year and the opening of fishing season. In his later years after he turned 80, he learned to sew and enjoyed quilting. He also learned to bake bread. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Joyce Crandall; a daughter, Nancy Pick, White Rock; two sons, Phillip (Tracey), Sunken Lake, Kings County and Ivan, New Minas; two sisters, Phyllis Pick, New Minas and Stella Brown, Lower Sackville; a brother, Reginald, White Rock; five grandchildren, Ian, William, Levi, Clayton and Lorna; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth; an infant sister, Bertha; a sister, Freda Long; four brothers, Arthur, Hughie, Stan and Delbert. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Reverend Ellen Hunt officiating. Burial took place in the White Rock Cemetery, Kings County. Margaret Elizabeth ‘Peggy’ Baxter, 76, of Digby, passed away peacefully on Wednesday April 16, 2008, at Tideview Terrace where she had been a resident with her late husband, Murray, for several years. Born in Fredericton, N.B., she was a daughter of the late Margaret A. (Hodgson) and James Rankine. Before coming to Digby, she resided in Yarmouth. In her early working years, she was a teller with the Bank of Nova Scotia in Digby. Later, she was a member of the staff of Digby Pines for many years. She was a member of the Trinity Anglican Church, Digby. Before becoming a resident at Tideview Terrace, Peggy was a volunteer at Bethany Bargain Bin. Peggy always welcomed into her home the many friends of her sons from hockey and ball teams where they could count on having a good meal before a game. Peggy was predeceased by Murray Baxter, her husband of 55 years on Jan. 3, 2008. She is survived by sons, James (Sarah), Winnipeg; Bruce (Laura), Oromocto, N.B.; grandchildren, Jamie and Margaret, Winnipeg; Matthew, Oromocto; Becky and Stacey, Hoyt, N.B.; Graham, Dayton, Ohio, USA; Nicole Lewis, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; two great-grandchildren, Gage and Noah, Hoyt N.B.; a sister, Barbara (Bruce) White, Charlottetown; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her two oldest sons, Murray and Graham; brothers, James Ronald Rankine and Wilfred Rankine; and sisters Mildred Jones and Gloria McInnis. Visitation was held April 20 at Jayne’s Funeral Home, Digby, where funeral service was held April 21 with Rev. Donald Robertson officiating. Phillip “Phil” Carlton DeVenney - age 81, Windsor Forks, Hants County, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2008, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born August 15, 1926, in Windsor Forks, Hants County, Nova Scotia, he was a son of the late John DeVenney and Nellie (Sweet) DeVenney. Phil was a farmer, author, wood carver and a man of many stories. He will be remembered as a man of great humour, with a ready smile, dedicated to his family, friends and farm. He worked the family farm for most of his life and also for the Hants Co-operative, until his retirement. After his retirement, Phil wrote three books of his memories of farming and logging in Hants County. He is survived by his wife, the former Donna (Haley), who was his perfect match; his daughter, Wendy (Gary) Shulba, Windsor; sons, Steve (Stella), Regina; and Michael, Halifax. Phil will also be missed by his grandchildren, Paul, Amanda and Layla; Phil was brother to John (Emma) DeVenney; Jim (Anna) DeVenney; Bob (Doreen) DeVenney; and Nancy (DeVenney) MacInnes; his many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Patricia (Mrs. Robie Maxner); and a brother, Alan DeVenney. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service was 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2008, in the Windsor United Church, 613 King Street, Windsor. The Rev. Bill Gibson officiated, followed by a reception in the Windsor United Church Annex. A private family interment was held in the Old Redden Burial Grounds, Windsor Forks. Lila Josephine Aalders – 65, of South Alton, Kings County, passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in South Alton, she was a daughter of the late Harris and Hilda (Best) Medicraft. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and friend. She enjoyed family gatherings, especially for meals. She was an avid gardener. She is survived by her husband, Laurie; a daughter, Elaine (Barry) Mahaney, Cambridge, Kings County; a son, Bill (Gayle), South Alton; a sister, Beatrice Schofield, Kentville; a brother, Garnet Medicraft, Red Deer, Alberta; four grandchildren, Vanessa, Rachael, Rebecca and Evan; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two sons, Leonard and Dale; two sisters, Velma Fraser and Anna Nickerson; a brother, Wayne Medicraft. There was no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 20, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, Pastor Dorothy Huntley officiated. Isabel May Addington – 83, of Kentville, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born on July 30, 1924 in Canning, she was a daughter of the late John and Blanche (Spicer) Thomson. Isabel was a homemaker and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her home and family were very important to her and she loved to knit mittens for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a life member of Trinity United Church, Canning, participating in church activities and a member of the choir for many years. She was also involved in the Ladies Auxiliary of the Canning Volunteer Fire Department. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, George Addington; two daughters, Louise Smith (Ron), Dartmouth; Carolyn Butters (John), Maitland; four grandchildren, Brent, Scott, John and Christa; five great grandchildren, Logan, Kaiya, Kayla, Ruby and Tyler; a great great granddaughter, Elise; a sister, Mary Barkhouse, Canning; a brother, Robert Thomson, Canning; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Nona Weisner; a brother, William Thomson. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and at Isabel’s request, there was no visitation. A family graveside service will be held at a later date in the Hillaton Cemetery, Kings County. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
