AbitiBowater announces purchase of Brooklyn Power Corporation and South Shore Power Services
AbitiBowater announced April 22 the purchase of Brooklyn Power Corporation and South Shore Power Services Incorporated by Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited.
Brooklyn Power and South Shore own and operate a biomass fueled electrical co-generation plant in Brooklyn, Nova Scotia that sells electrical power to Nova Scotia Power Incorporated and steam to the Mersey Paper mill located adjacent to the co-generation operation.
Biomass for the operation of Brooklyn Power comes primarily from wood waste from the Mersey sawmill in Oakhill, Lunenburg Co. and the paper mill, as well as from other sawmills and forest product operations in western Nova Scotia.
The acquisition secures the environmentally beneficial supply of steam for the paper mill, as well as the supply of renewable electrical power into Nova Scotia power system.
Union officials have stated in past interviews the purchase would greatly help reduce energy costs, considered a huge impediment in Nova Scotia.
At the time of the AbitibiBowater press release, no company officials were available for comment.
