Local teacher among those honoured during Education Week

Besides reading and writing, Lori Sigfridson's students are learning a thing or two about good citizenship.

The Carleton Consolidated School teacher organizes displays and communal meals focusing on a different culture or country each month of the school year. Students have learned German words, celebrated Hanukkah, eaten an Egyptian feast at Ramadan, celebrated Chinese New Year and attended presentations on cultures far different from their own.

Sigfridson also encourages students to try physical and extra-curricular activities offered in their community of Carleton. By taking part in these events, students value a positive relationship with the community and take a greater interest in citizenship.

Sigfridson was one of 25 teachers, principals, guidance counsellors and community members honoured with awards during an Education Week ceremony for promoting peace and understanding in schools and instilling good citizenship in students.

"On behalf of the province, I congratulate all award recipients for their dedication to helping students gain perspective on creating and maintaining peaceful communities. It will make them better global citizens as they grow," said Premier Rodney MacDonald. "Educating to compete is one of government's five key priorities. We share the goal of giving our young people the tools they need and deserve for a successful future."

The theme of this year’s Education Week was Partners for Peace: From the Classroom to the Community.

"Teachers play an important role in shaping the lives of their students," said Education Minister Karen Casey. "Education Week is a chance for us to honour those who have so keenly demonstrated to students the value of good citizenship and peace education.

Education Week is a co-operative effort of five education partners – the Nova Scotia Teachers Union, the Nova Scotia School Boards Association, the Nova Scotia Federation of Home and School Associations, la Fédération des parents acadiens de la Nouvelle-Écosse and the Department of Education.
