Two Queens County residents will attend volunteer awards

As they sat in a sun-warmed living room, Sandra Carver and Hubert Wareham spoke humbly of the Region of Queens Municipality selecting them to attend the 2008 provincial volunteer awards in Halifax on April 24.

“I feel really honored that my church has recognized the work that I do,” said Carver.

Having grown up in North Queens, she took a sociology course at Acadia University back in 1992.

She was required to get involved with seniors in some way, at which point she created the Meals on Wheels program.

16 years later, the program is still running and has recently expanded to surrounding communities.

“My Meals on Wheels is something that’s really important for me and I get lots of enjoyment out of being involved in that program,” declared Carver.

She is also a treasurer of the Queens County learning Network and a member of the South Shore Housing Commission.

Her volunteer work continues within her church where she serves as an Elder, chair of the Ministry and Personnel Committee, is secretary of the official board and the United Church of Women, she has taught Sunday school and volunteered as a janitor.

Carver is also the organizer of the annual Time, Talent and Treasure Auction, which is a fundraiser for the church.

Continuing her work in the church, she serves as the co-chair of the Pastoral Relations Oversight Committee of the South Shore Presbytery of the United Church.

She also helps out with the school breakfast program and is a national political party for the South Shore executive.

Carver describes her volunteer work as fun.

Hubert Wareham, Moved from Newfoundland to Toronto, then to North Queens in 1972.

He worked many jobs but mainly did body repair and paint work.

He was also a carpenter.

Very modest about his volunteer efforts, Wareham volunteers regularly at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #87 usually doing construction work.

He is involved in the Legion’s annual poppy campaign, monthly breakfasts and fundraisers as well.

When asked why he volunteers, Wareham replied, “I like the people and I just like trying to help somebody out, that’s all it is.”

Wareham transports people to medical appointments or other places they need to go when he’s not donating his time at the Legion.

He drives them wherever they need to go usually in exchange for a free meal.

Wareham also donates woodworking products such as boats to organizations to help their fundraising efforts.

He recently donated five items to the Newfoundland Days event in Lunenburg.

The six others nominated to be the Queens representative volunteer include, Neal Callaghan, Daniel Comeau, Beatrice Fancy, Jack Fancy, Carter Feltham and Diane Keddy.
