Hackmatack author visits the region
One of Canada’s rising writing stars will be visiting library branches in Digby and Weymouth on April 24. Hadley Dyer, a new voice in young adult fiction, is a Hackmatack Award nominee for her debut novel Johnny Kellock Died Today.
She will be at the Weymouth library at 9:15 a.m., and in Digby at 1 p.m.
The author grew up in the Annapolis Valley and now lives in Toronto, where she is the children’s book editor at James Lorimer & Co. She also writes non-fiction children’s books, is a regular contributor to magazines such as Canadian Family, Toronto Life, and OWL, and teaches children’s publishing at Ryerson University.
Set in the North End of Halifax, Johnny Kellock Died Today takes place during a long, hot Halifax summer in 1959. Young readers from area schools will be attending the author visits, but the readings are open to the public.
The Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book Award is an Atlantic Canadian book award which allows children to choose their favourite Canadian and Atlantic Canadian books.
This is the ninth year for the popular children’s book awards program, which looks to the readers of the books to judge the program. Young readers who have joined Hackmatack reading clubs over the last year choose their favourite authors from among 30 titles in French and English.
