Weymouth fire department was called to a structure fire Wednesday around 10 p.m. at 34 Weymouth Falls Road.

The home belonging to John and Donna French received smoke and fire damage but fire chief Roy Mullen said the dwelling was saved.

The Frenchs were not at home when the fire broke out but a passing motorist noticed smoke coming from the house.

Relatives living next door were alerted to the fire and went to the home in an attempt to rescue several small animals. Two cats, a bird and fish are believed to have perished.

St. Bernard fire department provided mutual aid.
