One win away
The Yarmouth Mariners are one win away from winning the Kent Cup and earning a trip to the Fred Page Cup.
Yarmouth shutout the Woodstock Slammers 4-0 last night at Mariners Centre to take a 3-2 series lead before the largest and loudest crowd of the season. Fans, regardless of their colours, were treated to a heck of a hockey game.
From the opening whistle the Mariners pushed and pushed and pushed. And, to their credit, Woodstock was able to hold them at bay. After two periods and 25 shots, Yarmouth only managed two goals. However Woodstock was so busy trying to quell the Yarmouth offence that they didn't have much time for their own.
Ryan Penney led the Mariners with two goals while Alexandre Soucy added three assists.
Scott Sack (game winner) opened the scoring at 2:00 to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead after the first period. Penney scored 23 seconds into the middle frame to extend the lead to 2-0 after the second period. Penney (second goal of game) scored at 9:09 to increase the Mariners lead to 3-0. Cody Lefrancois (power play) rounded out the scoring at 18:16.
Yarmouth went 1 for 5 on the power play while Woodstock went 0 for 4.
Yarmouth's Dallas Ungurian stopped all 24 shots for his third shutout win of the playoffs while the Slammers Ben MacFarlane stopped 28 of 32 shots in the loss.
Game six of this series takes place Thursday night at the Carleton Civic Center in Woodstock. Game time is set for 7:30pm.
The Mariners will be looking to capture the Kent Cup while the Slammers will try to force a game seven.
