Minor South Shore airport fuel spill
The final stages of cleaning up a minor March 20 aviation fuel spill at South Shore Regional Airport in Greenfield is nearly complete.
Region of Queens Economic and Tourism Development Director Brian Baker said at first they believed up to 4,000 litres of fuel erupted from the underground storage tanks but good news followed.
“The original report had us out there right away but it was actually a very minor spill.”
He said provincial Department of Environment and Emergency Measures protocol was immediately followed. Strum Environment has been excavating test wells. The amount spilled is vastly less, so small it is difficult to give an exact figure at this time, Baker said.
The tanks have been excavated and will be replaced with above ground tanks for easier maintenance. The airport will also store less fuel that will still more than meet the needs of the airport, he said.
Contaminated soil has been trucked away for bioremediation and it appears the water table hasn’t been affected. Baker said the clean-up operation should be completed early this week at the latest.
