Anglican Church in Lawrencetown closes
Deconsecration service held April 6
At noon on Sunday, April 6, with a final ‘alleluia,’ the last service in the graceful little church of St. Andrew, Lawrencetown, came to an end.
St. Andrew’s was built sometime around 1840 and has been the treasured spiritual home for Anglicans in the area. With its rounded pews and simple design, it breathes an air of peace and stability as the sun shines through the plain glass windows now gold with age.
In recent years, the congregation became too small to support it, and so on Sunday, April 6 the church was deconsecrated by the Rt. Rev’d Sue Moxley, Bishop of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
In her sermon, Bishop Moxley made it clear that, though the church has closed, the Christian spirit of those who worshipped there over so many years lives on in our lives.
Many thanks are due to Liz and Phil Milo who have worked so devotedly for the Lawrencetown congregation which is part of the Parish of Wilmot (Holy Trinity, Middleton and All Saints,’ Kingston). Liz will continue to deal with many aspects of the closure process.
The church, which was designated a municipal heritage property in 1992, will soon be put up for sale.
