Donald MacIsaac, president of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 61 in Yarmouth, applauds a veteran’s widow’s letter to the editor of the Chronicle Herald condemning their organization’s decision to discontinue a morning coffee club.
“That’s a beautiful thing and she’s exercising her right,” he said of Gloria Eckel. But he stands by the Legion’s decision to implement economic cutbacks by reducing the number of hours the facility is open.
“We are trying to address some costs here,” he said. “In order to save fuel, we asked people to respect orders. The floor voted 33 to 11 for this. These are hard decisions that are not taken easily or lightly. We were making a call that we thought would be in the best interest of the legion in heating this big building.”
MacIsaac added that the members of the coffee club were welcome to reschedule their social event for the afternoon when the Legion would be open.
Eckel wrote that she was appalled at the way veterans were treated at the Legion.
She said that the coffee club did not cost the legion anything as the participants paid for “everything.”
She also claimed that the president and executive had no military experience, wanted to get rid of the veterans, and turn the Branch into a social club for non-military members.
