March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued Browning (Thibault), Marie Olive Perpetue, 85, of Grosses Coques, died peacefully at Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Thursday, April 3, 2008. Born in Grosses Coques on March 6, 1923, Olive was the daughter of the late John and Lizzie Thibault. Her early years were spent in Mass, U.S.A. before her family returned to Grosses Coques where she attended grade school, and then high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Meteghan, and the Maritime Business College in Halifax. Olive served in the armed forces as a clerk in Halifax from 1943-1946. Following her marriage to Chuck in 1946, the couple lived in many postings across Canada and in Germany before settling in Grosses Coques when Chuck retired in 1971. Predeceased by husband Chuck. Survived by three children: John (Marilyn), Grosses Coques; Danny (Patricia), Oliver, BC; Wendy, Vancouver, BC and three grandchildren: Shari (Jeff), Karyn (James) and Kim. Brother Carl (Irene), Whycocomagh and their children Russell and Carlene. For many years Olive taught swimming and figure skating. She was a 60 year Legion Member. Olive loved her cats, gardening, reading, trips to Frenchy’s and the buck store and collecting dolls. Cremation has taken place and family will have visitations at Meteghan Funeral Home on Monday, April 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Mary’s Church, Church Point on Tuesday, April 22 at 11a.m. Donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church Fund or Yarmouth Regional Hospital Fund.
March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued SABEAN, Violet Muriel - 92, of Port Lorne, passed away, Wednesday, April 2, 2008 in the Northhills Nursing Home, Granville Ferry. Born in Port Lorne, she was a daughter of the late Joshua and Lillian (Taylor) Sabean. She was a member of the Emmanuel Congregational Christian Church, Middleton. Violet is survived by her daughter, Sheila Lewis, Berwick; grandchildren, Cynthia Kenneally (James Sherman), Berwick; Tammy Lewis, Prince George, BC; Randy Lewis (Joann Pineo), Bridgewater; Valerie (Gordon) Mitchell, Port Lorne, five great grandchildren; special friends, Rocky and Debbie Hebb and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard; son-in-law, Robert Lewis; sisters, Leona and Esther; brothers, Edwin, Hillard and Gilford. Visitation was held Saturday, April 5, 2008 in the Middleton Funeral Home, 398 Main Street, (902) 825-3448, where the funeral service was held Sunday, April 6, 2008, Rev. March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued WOOD, Deborah Elizabeth (Conrad) “Debbie”, 58, of Yarmouth, formerly of Shelburne, passed away Sunday, March 30, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Lockeport, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Eleanor (Foster) Williams. Deborah attended Hope Wesleyan Church, Shelburne and the Salvation Army of Yarmouth. She was very much a people’s person and liked to play Bingo. She volunteered and would sell tickets to help out the local animal shelter, and gave freely of her time to the Shelburne County Arena canteen. She is survived by her husband, David, Yarmouth; son, Roderick (Karen), Jordan Branch; daughters, Karen (Kevin) Williams, Jordan Branch; Teresa (Hastings Guy) Conrad, Shelburne; step-children, Jody, Alberta; Sandra, Dartmouth; Kimberley, Toronto, Ont.; Terrance, Yarmouth; brothers, Gene (Gail) Williams, East Jordan; Philip (Wendy) Williams, Alberta; sister, Marsha (Douglas) Chetwynd, Lockeport; grandchildren, Daniel, Dustin, Dilan, Lane and Matthew; several step-grandchildren. She was predeceased by brother, Richard. A memorial service was held on Wednesday, April 2 in the Hope Wesleyan Church, Sandy Point with Pastor Ed Otis officiating. March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued BOUDREAU, Gilles Rémi – 48, born April 6, 1959, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2008 at his home in Wellington, Yarmouth County, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born in Yarmouth, he was the son of the late Gerald Boudreau and Corinne LeBlanc. Gilles will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Melina (Tufts); children, Gerald (Alisha), Gardner’s Mill; Jason (Lise), Mavillette; Nicole (John), Halifax, and Eric and Julien, both at home. His memory will be forever etched in the hearts of his brothers – Réal (Bonita), Middle West Pubnico, and Yvon (Marie), Wedgeport. The loss of a cherished brother-in-law and uncle will be felt by his large extended family. “In facing your storm, you calmed our waters. In fighting your cancer, you healed us. In defeat, you were victorious. In dying you taught us how to live. In praying for a miracle you became one. And we are blessed forever.” Visitation took place from 2-4 and 7-9 on Wednesday, at H.M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, 29 Albert St., Yarmouth. The funeral mass was held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, April 3, from St. Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth, Father Maurice LeBlanc officiated, assisted by Father John MacPherson. Memorial donations may be made to the Seal Island Church Society. Cremation followed the funeral mass, with burial at a later date in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery, Yarmouth, and on Seal Island. Seal Island was a very spiritual place for Gilles, and his spirit will live on – Isaiah 40:11 – “He tends his flock like a shepherd.” Online condolences may be sent to the family through www.huskilson.net
March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued HARRIS, Joanna Primrose Cochrane of New York, NY and Port Royal, Nova Scotia, died in New York at the age of 86 on March 31, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, George DeLancey Harris, Jr., who passed away only three months earlier. She is survived by their son, James Harris, and her brother-in-law, Thomas L. Harris. Joanna was born and raised in London, England, the third child of Frank Cochrane and Eve Titheradge, both of whom were actors on the London stage. Joanna was a writer and poet, who published several children’s books and a collection of poetry. After serving with the Czech Relief Fund during WWII, she moved to New York in 1952, working as a junior editor at G. Putnam and Sons and CBS News, and appearing as a singer on the Arthur Godfrey Show in 1953. Joanna was a long-time member of the Louise Bogan Poetry Society, and appeared in Oprah Winfrey’s “O” Magazine in May 2002 in a photographic essay entitled, “Silver Girls”. Spending her summers in Nova Scotia, and her winters in New York, Joanna was blessed to have, as she put it, “the best of both worlds,” and a remarkable circle of friends in both locales. She will be interred, along side her recently-departed husband, in the Harris family plot at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to the Annapolis Royal and Area Food Bank. A memorial gathering will be held in early May.

March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued DEMINGS, Verta Louise, 79, Sable River, formerly of Shelburne, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2008 in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Shelburne, she was a daughter of the late Annie Jacklin. Verta was a very kind and generous person who loved her family. She ran a bowling alley and a restaurant in Marathon, Ontario for many years. She was an avid bowler and was noted for her fine cooking. Verta was President of the Legion in Marathon, Ontario and later a member of Branch #63 in Shelburne. She was also a devoted member of the Shelburne Lions Club. Verta and her husband, Ed, moved back to Sable River 25 years ago, bought a farm and raised cattle. Verta enjoyed singing, visits from her family, traveling and camping. She is survived by her husband, Edward; sisters, Janet O’Connell, Shelburne; Lillian Morrison, New Brunswick; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Jacklin, Shelburne, and Roxy Jacklin, Winnipeg; a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Edward and Kenneth Jacklin and brothers-in-law, Stanley O’Connell and Henry Morrison. The funeral service was held on Monday, April 7, 2008 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel with Rev. Matthew Sponagle officiating. Interment was in Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia. March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued MORTON, Ruth Marie, 84, of Roseway Manor, formerly of Shelburne, passed away in Roseway Hospital Thursday, April 3, 2008. Born at The Hawk, Cape Sable Island, she was a daughter of the late Randolph and Eleanor (Smith) Cunningham. Ruth was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In her early years she was employed at the Roseway Hospital, Cox’s Department Store and in later years at Simpson Sears. She was a member of the Happy Hour Club and the Shelburne County Women’s Liberal Association. Ruth enjoyed the outdoors. She was an avid reader and enjoyed doing word puzzles. She is survived by son, James, Port LaTour; daughter, Anne Chase, Beaverdam; brothers, Gayton, Roseway Manor; Owen (Marina), Churchover; Leigh (Bernadette), Yarmouth County; sister, Hazel (Victor) Burrill, St. John, N.B; grandchildren, Ashley and Jamie Chase. She was predeceased by her husband, Albert Edward Morton; brothers, Norman and Blanchard; sisters, Agnes, in infancy and Myrtle Nickerson. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service was will held on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 in H.M. Huskilson’s Funeral Chapel with Rev. Troy Dennis officiating. Interment of ashes in Pine Grove Cemetery. March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued THOMPSON, Peter Michael, of Comox, B.C. passed away suddenly on Friday, April 4, 2008, aged 59. Peter is survived by his daughters, Sarah Pettigrew and Lindsay McGrath; grandchildren Samantha Pettigrew and Kayle and Maggie McGrath, all of Ontario as well as his brother Doug Thompson of Nova Scotia. He served with the RCAF for over 30 years and in his spare time, volunteered with various Comox Valley charities such as the Soup Kitchen, the Therapeutic Riding Society and the Schizophrenia Society. Peter enjoyed playing guitar, painting with both watercolours and oils and was an active member of the Comox Valley Arts Council. Private arrangements entrusted to Comox Valley Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre, 1101 Ryan Road, Courtnay, B.C. March 30 to April 5, 2008 continued LeBLANC, Jean Theresa, 73, of Falmouth, Hants County, passed away on Friday, April 4, 2008, in the Hants Community Hospital, Windsor. Born August 31, 1934, in Montjoli, Quebec, she was the daughter of the late John L. and Helena B. (Mombourquette) Smith. Jean moved to the United States following her marriage in 1954, eventually settling in Melrose, Massachusetts. She always had a flair for fashion and loved to entertain with her husband, who was the life of the party. Together, they raised two daughters and eventually welcomed their four grandchildren, and her first great grandson is due in July. For a time, she and her husband managed Merry Meeting Cottages, New Durham, New Hampshire, then moved to Alton, N.H., before retiring back in Nova Scotia, where her greatest wish was to be close to her sisters again. Although in recent years, her illness kept her near home, she enjoyed her trips back to Maine and Massachusetts, for Christmas and other family gatherings. Jean is survived by her husband of 54 years, Alton Edmund LeBlanc; daughters, Wanda A. LeBlanc, York, Maine; Renee J. Boisvert, Dunbarton, New Hampshire; grandchildren, Steffanie Fahey, Massachusetts; Paul (Christina) Fahey, Massachusetts; Chelsea Boisvert, New Hampshire; Kevin Boisvert, New Hampshire; sisters, Evelyn (Claude) Copp, Falmouth; Jackie (Tom) Pothier, Falmouth; Eileen Greenman, Kentville; many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Marie Mitchell. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor (902-798-2232). There was no visitation by request. A Memorial Mass was 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2008, in St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 339 King Street, Windsor. The Rev'd. Fr. J. J. MacDonald officiated, followed by a reception in St. John's Parish Hall. Interment will be held at a later date in New Hampshire.
