Mariners cruise to 1-0 series lead
Someone call a cop because the Yarmouth Mariners killed the Woodstock Slammers last night at Mariners Centre.

Yarmouth's 6-2 win gives them a 1-0 lead in the Kent Cup final series.

With the exception of the game's opening two minutes, Yarmouth dominated every facet of the game. They won battles to loose pucks, battles in the corner, they looked better in the defensive zone and their power play was better. Oh yeah, and their offence was smothering — as usual.

Ryan Penney led the Mariners with one goal and two assists.

Penney opened the scoring at 2:09 to give the Mariners an early 1-0 lead. Steve Pearson (powerplay) scored 43 seconds later at 2:52 to extend the lead to 2-0 after the first period. Scott Sack (game winner) scored at 8:44 to increase the lead to 3-0. Austin Brown (powerplay) scored at 14:41 to get the Slammers on the board at 3-1.

Justin Saulnier (powerplay) scored 2:14 later at 16:55 to regain the three-goal lead at 4-1 after the second period. Jordan Scott scored at 3:39 to widen the lead to 5-1 until Mark MacEachern scored at 11:52 to get Woodstock to within three goals again at 5-2. Danny Anger (powerplay), who was all over the ice last night, rounded out the scoring at 15:38 to seal the win.

Yarmouth went 3 for 8 on the power play while Woodstock went 1 for 6.

Yarmouth's Dallas Ungurian stopped 21 of 23 shots for the win while the Slammers Ben MacFarlane, who was the only highlight for Woodstock last night, stopped 42 of 48 shots in the loss.

Game two of the series goes tonight at the Mariners Center at 7:30 p.m.
