Program to help students create their own jobs

Students in the Yarmouth area will have an opportunity to create their own job this summer. The Students in Business (SIB) Program is being offered throughout the province by the Nova Scotia Association of Community Business Development Corporations (CBDCs). The program will provide students with access to start-up capital and further support to start their own business.

The SIB Program targets Nova Scotia students who are between the ages of 15 and 34 attending, or plan to attend high school, college, university, or community college full-time. The program encourages and supports students in the operation of their own businesses and gives them the opportunity to experience entrepreneurship first hand.

“I’ve been doing entrepreneurship presentations in schools in the Yarmouth area and there is definitely a great deal of interest among students to create their own jobs. With the SIB Program students can realize this opportunity and gain valuable skills while making money doing something they actually enjoy.” said Karla Nickerson, outreach facilitator for the SIB Program in Yarmouth.

The SIB Program offers a maximum of $5,000 in loan assistance per business. The loans are interest free with flexible repayment terms. The program also provides training, counseling and business skills development. Students who participate in training and pay their loan back on time could qualify for performance and participation rebates.

Program applications and other information are available at www.studentsinbusiness.ca.

The program is delivered by the 13 CBDCs throughout rural Nova Scotia and by the Centre for Entrepreneurship Education and Development Inc (CEED) in the metropolitan region of the Halifax Regional Municipality. The program is made possible through the support of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation, and the Nova Scotia Department of Economic Development.
