John Basil (Jack) Bell - It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Jack Bell, 73, on Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at home surrounded by his loving family. Jack’s passing is a tremendous loss to his life partner and wife of 51 years, Audrey (Holden), and his sons, Garth (Dorothy) Bell, Welshtown, Jeffrey (Krista) Bell, Jordan Branch, and daughter, Amanda (Peter) Goodwin, Jordan Branch; and grandchildren, Jennifer Bell, Ryan Bell, Ira Bell, Aaron Bell, Benjamin Goodwin and Jacob Goodwin and step-granddaughter, Becka Walker. During his struggle with cancer, Jack’s faithful dogs, Jo-Ann and Baily and his cats, Susie and Mister, were forever by his side. Jack was born in Jordan Falls on May 25, 1934. He was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church, a founding member and former Fire Chief of the Jordan Area Volunteer Fire Department and a past member of the Jordan Lodge I.O.O.F. Jack was the son of the late Basil and Dorothy (deMolitor) Bell. He was predeceased by his brother, Fred Bell and is survived by his sister, Helen Bell (Jim) Dartmouth. Jack was the happiest when surrounded by his family, camping at Welshtown, Lake John and the Eight Mile Brook, cutting and splitting wood, hunting and fishing. In his teenage years, Jack worked at Webb Engineering, Halifax, with Powlie Varner Mining and Prospecting – Lake John Road, and with Shelburne Woodworkers, log driving. He joined Ven-Rez Products Ltd. on June 11, 1952 and retired after 47 years of service on May 25, 1999. He spent the next eight years doing volunteer work, fund raising and helping build Holy Trinity Church Hall, Jordan Falls, and helping to build the Beulah Burman Memorial Animal Shelter. He also enjoyed the work that he did for the Shelburne County Exhibition. Jack worked tirelessly for the Donald MacKay Festival, and he was instrumental in having a flagpole erected and flower gardens planted at the Donald MacKay Memorial Park, Jordan Falls. For 37 years he was a happy volunteer with the Jordan Falls Rebekah Lodge fundraisers, assisting in the annual canvassing for the Canadian Cancer Society and assisting at 26 Terry Fox Runs, until his health no longer allowed him to do so. He so enjoyed the years 2006-2007 working as a volunteer for the Cancer Treatment Centre in Yarmouth (and later was a recipient of their services) and for the Halifax Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. In 2007 Jack and his wife were recognized for their outstanding volunteer work, and were named Volunteers of the Year for the Municipality of Shelburne and they were honored at a reception in Shelburne and Halifax. A celebration of Jack’s life took place at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Jordan Falls, on Saturday, March 29. This was followed by a reception at the Odd Fellows Hall, Jordan Branch Road. Memorial donations may be made to the Jordan Falls Volunteer Fire Department in recognition of all work done by all volunteer firefighters.
