Holocaust survivor will speak to students
Windsor Forks District School’s Grade 6 classes are anxiously awaiting the arrival of a special visitor. Holocaust survivor Edith Gelbard will come their school April 11 to speak to more than 240 students from local schools. She will share with them her experience as a young Jewish child during the Holocaust.

Edith’s story was the feature of Kathy Kacer’s book, Hiding Edith, which Miss Fox read to her Grade 6 class last fall. Fox said her students became more enthusiastic toward the story than she could have expected. Their connection to the book was so powerful because Edith was close in age to them throughout the war.

After reading that Edith was currently living in Ontario, all 28 students wrote her, telling her what the book meant to them. After several letters and postcards back and forth between Edith and Fox’s students, the teacher wrote asking her to come to Nova Scotia and meet the students. They were pleased to hear that she would be thrilled to come.

Windsor Forks District School extends an invitation to anyone interested in learning more about Edith Gelbard and her amazing story of perseverance in a time of great hardship. An open house will take place April 11 at 7 p.m. This event is open to all ages.
