The Glooscap Elementary Home and School held a successful Pancake Breakfast March 22 in the multi-purpose room. The event commemorated the spring season with an Easter theme. Over 100 people enjoyed the breakfast of pancakes and sausages and the added bonus of homemade blueberry sauce.

“We do like this type of fundraising and prefer things that get families involved,” said Principal Corena Burbidge. “This was the first time for a spring breakfast and we will certainly do it again. We would like to thank the Village Meat store again for their assistance with the cost of the sausages and appreciate their support.”

The blueberries were donated by Nova Agri and prepared by Suzanne Gerrits. The extra blueberry sauce will be frozen and made into yogurt smoothies for the “Healthy Active Living” event coming up in May.

The Apple Tree Landing Family Education Centre held its annual Spring Fair at the Canning Lions Hall March 22. Visitors enjoyed the many events: a penny auction, dessert auction, live auction with auctioneer Debbie Reimer, an Easter egg hunt and a visit from the Easter Bunny.

Children’s games were also available like the sucker pull, tin can game, spinning wheel game, hockey shoot, fishpond and the beanbag toss. Other happenings like the ever-popular face painting and arts and crafts were also available.

Refreshments consisted of cotton candy and slushies, and a canteen with hot dogs, chili, pop and chips. Door prizes were also distributed and children received a free kids’ meal certificate donated by Boston Pizza of New Minas.

“I would certainly like to thank everyone for their donations and support. This is probably the best community that I’ve lived in and I’ve lived all across Canada. I’m proud to call Canning my home,” said Executive Director Debbie Reimer.

Reimer also added that 2008 was the centre’s 20th year, explaining that the centre began with just a few people sitting around a kitchen table. Organizers are hoping to do something special to commemorate this milestone in the near future.
