Garth L. Calkin – leading businessman and citizen of Kentville passed away, Sunday, March 16, 2008 at Shoreham Apartments, Chester, where he had recently moved to be close to his family. A son of Thomas P. Calkin, Kentville, and Elizabeth “Dolly” Dogherty, Charlottetown, he was born in Kentville May 18, 1907. He descended from New England Planters, was a third generation hardware merchant and civic spirited citizen identified with many commercial undertakings, charities and public services. Garth was predeceased by his wife of 51 years Rena Cox; brothers, Roy P. and Darrell L Calkin. He is survived by his children R. Gail, Joy D. and G. Thomas and grand-children, Bunch and Suzi Fraser, Chester; Brent, Beth and Jill Calkin, great grand-daughter Ella Jane, all of Vancouver, a niece and several grand nieces and a grand nephew. Garth has had a long and distinguished career which included civic, military, sports, fraternal and volunteer organizations. He was schooled in Kentville schools, Kings Collegiate School and graduated from Kings County Academy in 1924, entered T. P. Calkin Ltd. the same year as a junior clerk and retired from his business career in 1973, as President of T. P. Calkin Ltd. Garth’s 100th birthday was a celebration of his remarkable life as a distinguished citizen, business man and volunteer both in his town and province. In 2007 his work as Outstanding Volunteer was recognized by the Town of Kentville and the province of Nova Scotia. He was a town councilor and as well, served three years as Mayor of Kentville; a founding member (1932) of the Apple Blossom Festival and Chairman of the Parade Committee; a member and Past President of the Kentville Board of Trade, and the first person appointed an Honorary Life member of this organization in 1975; served as a member and President of the Retail Merchants Assoc.; First President of the Kentville Youth Association and a very active member during the period when the old wooden arena was purchased from private ownership, repaired and operated as an ice rink and a Youth Centre; eventually the building was turned over to the town; through Rotary he carried out the research, planning, fund raising and the building of the Swimming Pool in Memorial Park, 1960; was instrumental in the organization of Little League Baseball in Kings County; member Kentville School Board; Board Member of the Blanchard Fraser Memorial Hospital; appointed to Nova Scotia Hospital Insurance Commission in 1967; member/Chair Kentville Electric Commission; Chairman of the Planning Advisory Committee of the Town of Kentville for over 20 years; First Chairman of Annapolis Valley Regional Industrial Park Commission; Director, Kentville Business Improvement Corp. 1980-83. The military had been of interest to Garth, first as Capt. Kings County Academy Cadets, followed by commissioning as 2nd Lieutenant of the Kings Canadian Hussars, 1938, he enlisted Canadian Army active, June, 1942, and was discharged September, 1945. He was a long-time member of the Nova Scotia Rifle Association and member of the NS team several times in national competitions. Garth was an outstanding volunteer in many local organizations starting as a member of the Kentville Volunteer Fire Dept. for 16 years; he was a very active Rotarian for 60 years and a Past President of the Kentville Rotary Club, he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow in1989; Past President Kentville Youth Association; Past President and Honourary life member of Glooscap Curling Club; Past President and Honourary member of Ken-Wo Golf and Country Club; Past Master and Honourary Life Member of Kentville Lodge A.F. & A.M. #58, Meritorious Service Medal 1995; Certificate of Merit from The Canadian Red Cross Society and Meals on Wheels. In addition to his many civic and volunteer activities he and Rene led an active family and social life within the community. In 1996 he completed the autobiography, “A Bit of a History of Kentville as I Knew It”; a cherished legacy for his children, grandchildren and their children. We treasure this book with the memories of family and town history which it chronicles. We want to thank Garth’s associates, care givers, friends and neighbours who gave of their time and kindness in ways that helped him remain part of his community until his death. Cremation has taken place and there was no visitation by family request. A Masonic Lodge service was held at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2008 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 24, 2008, Reverend Doctor Randy Crozsman and Canon S. J. P. Davies officiated. Burial will take place at a later date in the Oak Grove Cemetery, Kentville. CLEMENTS, Florence Juliette - 76, Yarmouth, passed away March 16, 2008, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born on January 3, 1932, in Little River, Yarmouth Co., she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Georgina (Saulnier) Clements. Florence is survived by brother, Paul (Annette), Pubnico, Yarmouth Co.; sisters, Natatie, Pubnico; Rosalie (Emilie) Amirault, Pubnico; Eliza (Thomas) Fitzgerald, Quinan; 18 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers and a sister in infancy. CARVER, Malcolm L. - 67, of Queens Manor, Liverpool, formerly of Caledonia, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 16th, 2008 in Queens General Hospital, Liverpool. Born in Caledonia, he was the son of the late Lawrence Seldon and E. Ruey Carver. He was employed with Bowater Mersey Paper Company Limited running equipment for over thirty years retiring in 1995. He loved hunting and fishing especially with his buddy Thurlow Waterman. He was a loving father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his daughters Wanda Carver (Carroll Conrad) of Tantallon; Marsha (David) Freeman of South Brookfield; sons Melvin (Jennifer) of Middlefield and Michael (Marie) Conway of West Caledonia; grandchildren: Kirstin, Jessie, Dalton, Vanessa, Autumn and Gloria; and his friend Beatrice. Naomi Elizabeth Poole – 81, of Coldbrook, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, Sunday, March 16, 2008 in the Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Woodside, Halifax County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Elva (MacKenzie) Pace. She had been employed for 17 years with K-Mart. Following her retirement, she moved to the Annapolis Valley. She is survived by her daughter, Dianne (William) Lonar, Coldbrook; granddaughter, Kelley (Matthew) Fredericks, Coldbrook; great grandchildren, Jacob and Riley; a sister, Lorraine (Laurie) Dalrymple, Dartmouth; a brother, Lorne Pace, Eastern Passage; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Claire Beachom, Winnipeg. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville and there will be no visitation by family request. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008 in St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Berwick, Father Larry Pitcher officiated. COTTREAU (LeBLANC), Zita – Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., passed away peacefully at Villa Saint Joseph-du-Lac, Dayton, on Monday, March 17, 2008. Born in Wedgeport, Yarmouth Co., on January 3, 1913, she was the fourth daughter of the late John A. LeBlanc and Ambroisine Pothier. A member of Les Femmes Chretiennes and Le Club des Acadiens Seniors of Wedgeport, Zita loved quilting, knitting and playing cards. As an exceptional homemaker and a devoted wife and mother, she is remembered also for her special love of her family. Surviving are her four children, Jeanne, Halifax; Thomas (Helen), Charlottetown; Blanche, Charlottetown; Patricia (Jim Muldowney), Comox, British Columbia. She was a much loved grand-mère to grandchildren, Michelle (Bill Whelan), Suzie (Phil Manovil), Tommy, Jennifer (Adam Zanbilowicz) and Lise Anne (Greg Pierce) and great-grandchildren, Hayley, Laura, Emily, Anna, Katie, Benjamin, Elliot, Sophie and Samuel. Also left to mourn her are a brother, Willard (Regina), Wedgeport; sisters, Jeanne, Yarmouth; Genesta, Wedgeport; Virginia, New Hampshire. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 66 years, Henri; a brother, Mandé; sisters, Alberta, Frances, Gertrude; a grandson, Stephen. CLAREMONT, Robert David – 83, Hibernia Street, Yarmouth, passed away on Monday, March 17, 2008, at home. Born October 19, 1924 in Comeau’s Hill, he was a son of the late David and Adeline (DeViller) Clairmont. Robert worked as a plumber, having worked for Germain’s Plumbing and Electrical for 28 years, as well as in Goose Bay, Labrador as a pipefitter. He also worked at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital in the maintenance department, and did some plumbing work on his own. He was a member of Saint Ambrose Cathedral parish, Yarmouth, where he served as an usher, and he was the president of the Canadian Cancer Society, Yarmouth Chapter, as well as having served as an officer for the Ostomy Society of Nova Scotia. He was also a former member of the Yarmouth Lions Club. Robert was a talented painter, and he enjoyed gardening and woodworking. Surviving are his wife, Doris Marie (Jacquard) Claremont; daughters, Donna Ann (Larry) Fitzgerald, Port Maitland, and Marilyn Marie (Donnie), Comeau’s Hill; a granddaughter, Brittony; great-grandsons, Noah and Gabriel; brothers, Lawrence (Margaret) Clairmont, Comeau’s Hill; Delmar (Martha) Clairmont, Jonquière, Qc.; sisters, Lorraine Boudreau, White Rock, BC; Rosema Clairmont and Rhoda (Sam) Cottreau, both of Comeau’s Hill. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a son in infancy; brothers, Freeman, Stillman and Alfred; sisters, Emilie Fitzgerald, Margaret Meuse, Eunice Doucette-Mullen; Adeline Boivin, Delila Caron. Susan Yvonne Oickle - 48, Aylesford, Kings Co. passed away Monday March 17, 2008, at home. Born in Niagara Falls, Ont. & raised in Morden, Kings Co. she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Lois (Mundy) Becker. Susan was a devoted daughter, wife, mother & sister and loved her two puppies.
