March 9 to March 15, 2008 continued LEOPOLD, Carl William John, 81, of Falmouth, Hants County passed away Friday, March 14, 2008 in the Dykeland Lodge, Windsor. Carl was born January 28, 1927 in New Ross, Lunenburg County. Carl was a loving husband of 50 years, father and grandfather. He loved life to the fullest everyday, always smiling and interested in everyone. Through his life he chose many occupations; woodsman, carpenter, N.S.Light & Power and road construction before retiring. Carl's hobbies were many, he always enjoyed being involved with his children and grandchildren’s activities, scouting, fishing and hunting. Surviving are his wife Mary (Payzant); sons, Irvin, John and Ronald (Joan) ; granddaughter, Sarah Leopold, all of Falmouth; sister, Shirley (Clarence) Caldwell, Three Mile Plains; stepmother, Ruby (John) Bennett; stepbrother, James (Elaine) Leopold, Greenfield, Lunenburg County; step-grandchildren, Amanda and Terry Leopold; mother-in-law, Alice Lane, Falmouth; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; nieces and nephews. Carl was predeceased by his mother and father, Brenton and Mary Leopold of Wile Settlement; brother Lawrence; sisters, Marjorie and Thelma; father-in-law, Joel Payzant. Cremation took place under the direction of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, 194 King Street, Windsor. Visitation was from 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008 at the Centre Falmouth Hall, where a celebration of Carl's life to followed at 2 p.m. Rev. Wayne Merrill officiated and was assisted by Rev. Marshall Caldwell. Interment followed in the Centre Falmouth Cemetery, Falmouth. March 9 to March 15, 2008 continued SMITH, Beverly Ann, 58, Dartmouth, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2008 in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Halifax, she was the daughter of the late Capt. Edward Owen and Kizzie (Grandy) Grandy. Beverly was full of life, loved her family and friends. She was a caring and loving wife and mother to her children and grandchildren, which she was quite proud of. Beverly was very giving and she embraced and loved everyone. She was an avid reader, fond of cooking, and enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the cottage. She always enjoyed playing cards with the children, Bible Study on Tuesday nights and driving. She had a gift to embrace children with special needs. Too bad there were not more people in the world like Beverly. She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, John; daughter, Heather (Matthew) Banfield, Eastern Passage; sons, Trevor John (Cheryl Arenburg), Craig Leigh, both of Dartmouth; sister, Marilyn Louise (Ron) Conrod, Dartmouth; special sister-in-law, Nancy (Terry) McIntyre, Shelburne; grandchildren, Heidi Adeline and Alexis Kizzie; niece, Rhonda (Cory Morgan); nephews, Owen, Peter, Joey and Mark; great-niece, Kayla and great-nephew, Cameron. The funeral service was held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 in South End Baptist Church, Rev. Marlene Knowles officiating. Burial was held in Dartmouth Memorial Gardens. Born May 2, 1961, he is survived by his special parents, Ervin and Rosamond (Gollan) Smeltzer, Upper Vaughan; his fiancee`, Cheryl Raney, Halifax; sisters, Myrna Smeltzer, Windsor; Rodena (Andre`) Mignault, Kingston, Ontario; three nieces, Krista and Katelyn Halbgewachs; Jessica Mignault; one nephew, Alexander Mignault. He was predeceased by his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Dorothy (Rafuse) Gollan; paternal grandparents, Edward and Ethel (Hiltz) Smeltzer. Cremation has taken place under the care of Lindsay's Windsor Funeral Home, Windsor. A graveside memorial service was 2 p.m. Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. March 9 to March 15, 2008 continued THOMPSON, Shawn Hugh - 25, Brooklyn, Yarmouth Co., passed away suddenly March 15, 2008, in New Glasgow. Shawn was born on July 26, 1982, in Yarmouth to his parents, Brian and Lynn (LeBlanc) Thompson, Overton. Shawn was an avid car and truck enthusiast, and dirt bike rider. He had a real passion for racing and rally trucks, and loved to tinker with vehicles. Shawn enjoyed water skiing and hockey. He was a wonderful father and really loved his daughter, Taylor. Shawn will be sadly missed by all of his family, including many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as by all those who loved him. He will also be missed by his dog, Honda. Besides his parents, Shawn is survived by his girlfriend, Tammy Fitzgerald; daughter, Taylor Fitzgerald, at home, along with another child due in May 2008; paternal grandmother, Esther Swyer, Yarmouth; paternal grandfather, Sonny Thompson and stepgrandmother, Anna Brenton; sister, Katie (Justin) Bishara; nephew, Hunter Bishara, and niece, Grace Bishara, Yarmouth. He was predeceased by brother, Robert Hugh; maternal grandmother, Sarah LeBlanc; maternal grandfather, Robert LeBlanc; paternal stepgrandmother, Joan Thompson; cousin, Jared LeBlanc Roberts. Visitation will be held in Sweeny's Funeral Home, Yarmouth, on Friday, March 21, from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service took place Saturday, March 22, 3 p.m. in Sweeny's Funeral Home Chapel, Pastor Bradley Pass officiated. March 9 to March 15, 2008 continued Robertson, John Alexander (Major Ret.) - 83, of Kingston, NS passed away March 11, 2008 at Valley Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Moncton, October 27, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles and Marjorie (Magee) Robertson. His love of music began very early in life as a member of the St. George’s Anglican Church Boy’s Choir in Moncton, and soon learned to play piano and graduated to the pipe organ. He said that the organ had a soul and studied passionately his whole life. At various times he was a member of Canadian College of Organists, the Nova Scotia Choral Federation and Kings Choral. He joined the Military during the Second World War as a navigator and flew submarine patrols out of Tor Bay, Newfoundland. After the war he returned to Moncton, Re-joining the Air Force in 1949. He served at numerous bases across Canada eventually settling in the Greenwood area, retiring in 1971. He was a church organist for 35 years. Many brides walked up the aisle lead by his beautiful music. He also had wonderful choirs and numerous broadcasts on the local radio station at Christmas. He played for many years after, filling in wherever needed. He built and operated Hillcrest Store for 14 years, and then operated a craft supply store until his final retirement in 1990. He was past President of the Greenwood Curling club, past Treasurer of the Middleton Curling club and enjoyed playing various bonspiels around the province, especially Baccaro. After his retirement he enjoyed spending winters in Dunedin, Florida, where he and Louisa were active members of the Lake Highlander Shuffleboard Club. He enjoyed baseball and was a strong fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Louisa Alexander, daughter Sharon Robertson Hatt, Kingston; son Lawrence “Larry” (Darlene) Calgary, AB; grandchildren Angie, Lori, Natalie and Shanara. He was predeceased by half brother Charles. A celebration of his life was held Friday, March 14, 2008 in Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Middleton. Father Michael McKeage and Rev. March 9 to March 15, 2008 continued NICKERSON, Sidney Rupert, known as Bubby, 72, Atwood’s Brook, died Thursday, March 13, 2008 in Roseway Hospital. Born in Atwood’s Brook, he was the son of the late Sidney P. and Winifred E. (Perry) Nickerson. He was a lighthouse keeper on Bon Portage Island for ten years. He was a painter for the Boys’ School, worked in Beaver Bank, Cape Ann Seafoods, Acadian Construction, and on the lake boats in Ontario. He enjoyed fishing and hunting up to his camp with family and friends. Before going on the island he had his own boat (Dale & Donna), then came home and worked for Clifford Hopkins. He is survived by his former wife, Helen Pothier, son Dale (Dale) Doctor’s Cove, daughter Donna (Howard) d’Entremont, Lower West Pubnico; sister, Vera Garron (Paul Armstrong), Ontario; five grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Erica, Paige & Haley; a great number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service took place at H. Huskilson’s Chapel on March 16, 2008, Rev. Edwin Allen officiating. Burial was at the Doctor’s Cove Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Bear Point Baptist Church, Roslin Nickerson Fund, the Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
