South West Health issues reminder for those visiting patients
South West Health has been seeing some increased activity of diarrhea and vomiting within the district. While this is normal for this time of year, they are reminding those who are ill not to visit hospital patients.
Although visitors are important to patients, the germs causing diarrhea, vomiting, fever, colds, flu and other contagious illnesses are easily passed to them.

To prevent the spread of common germs causing diarrhea and vomiting:

Frequently wash your hands, especially after toilet visits, changing diapers, and before eating or preparing food.

Thoroughly clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces immediately after an episode of illness by using a bleach-based household cleaner.

Immediately remove and wash clothing or linens that may be contaminated with virus after an episode of illness (use hot water and soap).

Flush or discard any vomit and/or stool in the toilet and make sure the surrounding area is kept clean.

A thorough hand wash should take approximately 15 seconds or the length of time it takes to sing the ABCs. Make sure you scrub under your fingernails, between your fingers and around your wrist area. These are places people often miss when washing their hands.

Once you have washed your hands, leave the water running – dry your hands then use the towel or paper towels to shut off the taps. This will prevent you from re-contaminating your hands.

Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective for keeping your hands clean. This is a good option if hand-washing facilities are not available.
